Just Getting Started

Day one of the Pacific Collegiate Swim and Dive Conference Championships saw the Eagles gather four individual podium placements.

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. --- Biola Swimming and Diving was back in the pool on Wednesday, battling at the PCSC Championships. The Biola men kicked off its title defense with an event crown and a trio of second place finishes on day one. The BU women added a bronze medal on Wednesday, totaling 181 points on day one.


Samuel Slezak kicked off the round of finals with a victory for the men's squad. The junior crushed his previous best in the 1000 free, placing first and scoring 32 points with a time of 9:11.55. Second place also belonged to the Eagles. Josh Peace was the next to touch in the long distance race, recording his own personal-best time of 9:19.49. Three of the first four finishers in the 1000 free were from Biola, as Noah Hall claimed fourth place at 9:34.97.

On the women's side, a freshman scored from the number seven spot, as Emily Sheldon pulled in 23 points in the 1000 free with a time of 10:34.31.

The 200 IM came next on the agenda, leading to a sixth place showing from Allison Yancey. The sophomore went back-to-back with Colette Friedley who grabbed seventh. Jacob Haaksma reached the podium for the men, taking second place at 1:51.53. Sean Rho also made the finals top heat, grabbing eighth with a time of 1:55.44 and was followed by Ryan Monrean in ninth place.

The 50 free sprint saw another Eagle hit the podium. Phoebe Munholland raced to third place, clocking in at 23.63. Her time on Wednesday beat her previous best set last year at these conference championships.

In the lone relay of the day, the BU women claimed eighth place in the 800 free relay. The men finished in second place at 6:44.19, coming in nearly 14 seconds faster than their entry time.

The diving prelims saw Biola come through strong with impressive performances from Lorelai Carney and Abby DePina on the 3M board. The finals for the women's 3M and men's 1M will be Thursday afternoon.

Thursday's competition at the PCSC Championships will begin with prelim swims at 9:30 am and then followed with dive finals at 12:50 and final swims at 5:00 pm at the East Los Angeles College Swim Stadium.
