A Festive Finish at Chase Gym

Eagles showcase depth in dominant home win.

LA MIRADA--- The Biola women's basketball team earned a decisive 75–49 victory over Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday afternoon at Chase Gymnasium.

"That was a great team win," stated head coach Mike Simonson. "I was so proud of our tag team effort. Everyone on our roster was able to play and contribute. Laney and Hanne both had such a quiet and efficient night scoring. Their buckets were key to igniting runs in the game."

Twelve Eagles saw action against the Nanooks, with every player grabbing at least one rebound and 11 contributing to the scoring column. Laney Grider led all scorers with 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting, while Hanne Nybo followed with 15 points and three steals.

Biola's rebound leaders were Jaycee Goldsmith and Alyssa Kubo who collected eight each. Goldsmith played another defensive gem, leading her team with two blocks and three steals.

Simonson continued, "I am so proud of the 22 assists in the game. It shows how unselfish we played. We also did a tremendous job on the boards by limiting them to one shot."

Grider collected a team-high of five assists. She was followed by Kubo and Emily Cruz who posted season-highs of four.

"I am so happy for Emily," concluded Simonson. "Playing confident and scoring her first points as a Biola Eagle. It's been a long road for her to get to this point and she did a remarkable job playing fearless and poised."

Cruz joined BU for the 2024–25 season but was injured early in the fall and ultimately was forced to sit out the year. Cruz played 15 minutes tonight and finished with six points, four boards and four assists in her Biola debut.

"It's been a very long time but it feels so great to get back out there," stated Cruz. "This whole time I've put my faith in God. This game gave me a lot of confidence going into conference play."

Biola set the tone early, jumping out to a 22–16 lead after the first quarter behind efficient shooting and strong interior play. Grider provided an immediate spark, scoring both inside and from beyond the arc, while Nybo helped control the glass as the Eagles established momentum.

The Eagles continued to build their advantage in the second quarter, outscoring the Nanooks 17–13. Biola's defense limited Alaska Fairbanks' opportunities, forcing turnovers and holding the visitors to just 29 points in the first half to take a 39–29 lead into the break.

Coming out of halftime, Biola put the game out of reach with its most dominant stretch of the afternoon. The Eagles held Alaska Fairbanks to just seven points in the third quarter while pouring in 19 of their own. Grider and Nybo led the charge offensively, and Goldsmith anchored the defense with strong rebounding and rim protection.

Biola maintained control in the fourth quarter, continuing to rotate players and share the scoring load. Kayla Jones knocked down a three-pointer, Alyssa Goode added a pair of late baskets, and the Eagles closed out the game with a 17–13 fourth-quarter advantage.

With the victory, Biola improved to 5-4 overall while the Nanooks fell to 0-10. Biola's next game is Saturday, Jan. 3 at 5:30pm against Vanguard University.
