Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Billi Derleth, Sports Information Director

BU Challenges No. 25 CPP

The Biola women’s basketball team lost 66–57 to nationally-ranked No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona at Kellogg Arena.

POMONA, Calif.---The Biola women's basketball team lost 66–57 to nationally-ranked No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona at Kellogg Arena.

Biola delivered a poised opening frame, matching the nationally-ranked Broncos shot for shot to end the first quarter tied 14–14. Grace Moyers led the scoring effort with six points on two made three-pointers. Laney Grider added four points, while Jaycee Goldsmith and Addison Taylor each scored two.

"Tonight was a hard fought game against one of the better teams in the region," stated head coach Mike Simonson. "I thought we made good adjustments coming out of halftime against their press and it opened up some good looks from three."

Cal Poly Pomona gained the upper hand in the second quarter, outscoring Biola 18–13 to take a 32–27 lead into the halftime break. BU fought to take a 19–17 lead early in the quarter but a series of defensive stops and an 8–0 run pushed the Broncos ahead 29–21. Grider broke Cal Poly Pomona's momentum with a jumper. Lizzy Weber and Goldsmith also scored baskets before the quarter ended.

Biola came out of the halftime break with renewed energy, shooting an impressive 66.7% from the field and knocked down five three-pointers in the third quarter. Moyers sank three treys in the period — including two in the final minute — helping Biola overcome a 47–43 deficit to enter the fourth quarter ahead 49–47. Taylor added six points in the quarter, while Goldsmith hit a timely three that helped fuel the Eagles' surge.

The Eagles struck first in the fourth quarter, but Pomona quickly regained control with a 7–0 run that moved them ahead 54–49. The Broncos continued to build momentum by forcing Biola into difficult shots and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities. Despite a late three-pointer from Alyssa Kubo that cut the deficit to seven, Biola was unable to close the gap as CPP sealed the game at the free-throw line.

Moyers had a standout performance with a career-high of 18 points — all from three-point range — and three rebounds.

"Grace was on fire and we needed every one of them," stated Simonson. "Going into the fourth it felt like we had the momentum and a win was in grasp."

Grider contributed 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals in an all-around effort. Goldsmith added eight points and three rebounds, while Taylor provided eight points, four rebounds, and two assists off the bench.

"Kudos to Cal Poly Pomona," concluded Simonson. "They are physical and did a great job exploiting us and getting to the free throw line. We will learn a lot from this game and as we prepare for conference."

Biola plays next against Fresno Pacific at the Special Events Center. The Eagles and Sunbirds will begin PacWest Conference play at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4th.
