Grider Grinds in OT Victory

Biola secures its first conference win behind Grider’s 21 points and critical late-game scoring.

FRESNO, Calif.---The Biola women's basketball team dug deep to take down Fresno Pacific 79-73 in overtime at the Special Events Center.

Laney Grider led her team in points, made free throws and rebounds. She earned her first double double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds and her second 20-point game. The Junior went 7-for-17 in the field and 6-for-8 on free throws.

"Laney executed great down the stretch and was very aggressive, stated head coach Mike Simonson. "She was a big spark to ignite us to victory."

Three other Eagles scored in the double-digits including Hanne Nybo (17 points), Alyssa Kubo (17 points) and Grace Moyers (12 points). Jaycee Goldsmith shined on defense, leading BU with three blocks and three steals.

"I'm very proud of our team," continued Simonson. "Grace stepped up and hit a big three that brought our team alive and Jaycee was key to get some huge stops to control the paint. Fresno Pacific is an incredibly tough and scrappy team. They had an incredible third and fourth quarter to fight back and take the lead."

Grider scored the final five points in regulation to force Fresno Pacific into overtime. Nybo set the tone for Biola in OT, scoring the first four points of the period. She got fouled in the beginning and scored on both attempts at the free throw line. Nybo continued to score a basket after a block by Goldsmith.

Biola held onto the lead for the rest of the frame and went on to out-score FPU 13-11. The score got as close as a one-point advantage at 68-67 but another five-point run by Grider would give Biola the edge. Goldsmith was once again responsible for halting FPU's offensive effort, making a steal that gave Grider the opportunity to score back-to-back.

The Eagles shot 39.7 percent in the field, 30 percent from beyond the arc and 80 percent from the free throw line. Biola was an impressive 16-from-20 at the free throw line and a nearly perfect 11-from-12 in overtime.

"We showed great poise from the FT line," said Simonson. "That was crucial to steal the win."

BU led FPU by as much as 20 points in the first half and had a 37-19 lead heading into the halftime break. Fresno Pacific bounced back in the second half where they out-scored Biola 43-25.

Simonson concluded, "I'm so thankful for the lessons we will take from the game and ecstatic that we get to learn with a win. Being 1-0 in conference with a road win is such a blessing as we prepare for a tough Jessup team on Saturday."

Biola improved 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the PacWest Conference while FPU fell 3-3 and 0-1 in the PacWest. The Eagles play next on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 12 p.m. against Jessup.
