Eagles Fight to the Finish

Balanced attack not enough for Biola in 3-1 defeat

ROCKLIN, CALIF. --- The Biola Volleyball team visited Jessup in Warrior Arena for a non-conference matchup. Despite multiple set point opportunities, the Eagles fell short, 3-1 (28-30, 24-26, 25-19, 25-22).

The first two sets were tightly contested affairs. The Eagles found some momentum going on a 7-3 run. Kills from Kendall Vandertuig and Emma Fairbairn set up Biola's first set point. Three more set points followed for the Eagles but they couldn't shut the door, dropping set one, 30-28.

Set two was a mirror image of set one. Biola started off on a 8-2 run, featuring three aces from Bethany Bellfi and Bri Bellfi, but a 11-5 Warrior run tied things up at 13 all. Huge blocks from Simi Kapustova and Juliana Van Ommering, along with kills by Savannah Simpson and Vandertuig, boosted the Eagles to set point. The Warriors, however, stole the second frame after three consecutive points, 26-24.

Everything came together for the Eagles in set three. A Hannah Hanson kill and another Bellfi ace gave Biola a 6-0 lead. After the Warriors fought back and tied it at 13 apiece, Biola's 12-6 run sealed the third, 25-19. Lexi Lambert and Hanson got everyone involved offensively. Simpson, Van Ommering, Kapustova, and Vandertuig bounced clutch kills and Bethany Bellfi closed it out.

Riding the third set momentum, The Eagles battled to a 9-9 tie. A three point burst from the Warriors gave them a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Biola put together a complete showing but it wouldn't be enough as the Warriors closed the match, 25-22.

Offensively, Simpson had the best night of her collegiate career, tallying eight kills on 11 attempts, totaling a .727 hitting percentage. Lambert secured a double double, 26 assists and 11 digs. Van Ommering and Vandertuig registered double digit kill efforts while Hanson added eight kills and 22 assists.

With the loss, the Eagles move to 13-7 overall.

The Eagles will play on Halloween night against the Westmont Warriors (7-12, 2-4) in Murchison Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
