A Day for the Seniors

Biola Swimming and Diving honored its nine seniors on Saturday, during its dual meet with UC Santa Cruz.

LA MIRADA --- The seniors stole the show on Saturday afternoon, as the graduating class for Biola Aquatics received their flowers. In between the diving and swimming portions of the meet Gavin Kelley, John Grasso, Donatus Onu, Jacob Haaksma, Morgan Kampfer, Ryan Monrean, Lorelai Carney, Abby DePina, and Sebastian Burgos were honored for their contributions to the swim and dive program.


The day of competition was a dual meet between Biola and UC Santa Cruz. 

Diving kicked off the day and Biola started strong. Carney was the front runner for the women on both boards, scoring 285.70 in the 1M event and 303.65 in the 3M. Fellow senior, DePina, went for second in the 3M and third in the 1M, while Lauren Smith traded spots with her with a third place in the 3M and second in the 1M.

For the men, Caleb Pook was the leader in the clubhouse. He won on both boards, reaching as high as 347.55 on the 1M board. In the 3M event, he also eclipsed 300 points in the win with a score of 315.45 and he was followed by Burgos in second place at 252.50.

200 medley relay came through first for the swimming portion, and Biola kept up the momentum. The women's A-Team for Biola delivered by edging out UC Santa Cruz by .44 seconds. The group of Allison Yancey, Malia Ciolli, Morgan Kampfer, and Phoebe Munholland combined for a time of 1:46.44 for first place. The Biola men's A-Team came up next and won by an even closer margin. A time of 1:33.20 for Nathan Griffin, Tate Fitzgerald, Andrew Hanson, and Koen Vos beat out the visitors by .19 seconds.

Allison Yancey had herself a day with two individual crowns on Saturday. The sophomore scored the win in the 200 IM at 2:08.38 and repeated at the top of the leaderboard in the 100 back at 57.51. 

Malia Ciolli was next in line in the 200 IM touching the wall at 2:12.27, following Yancey. Ciolli also claimed the top spot in the 100 breaststroke, logging a time of 1:07.50.

The long distance races belonged to Josh Peace. The sophomore came in first place in the 500 and 1650 events with times of 4:44.19 and 16:06.54, respectively.

Another senior got in on the action on Saturday with Jacob Haaksma scoring in the 200 IM and 100 breast. Haaksma netted the win in the 200 IM at 1:54.35, while adding a second place finish at 59.05 in the 100 breast.

Alejandro Marchesini also recorded multiple top-two finishes, claiming first in the 100 back (51.65) and second in the 200 free (1:43.11).

The 50 free featured a pair of Eagles on the podium for the women. Phoebe Munholland won the event at 24.45 and was followed by Angelina Ahmadi-Kashani in third place.

Nathan Griffin also nabbed a win for Biola on Saturday, winning the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.36.

Biola will have one more meet prior to the conference championships, racing at Fresno Pacific on Friday.
