Warriors Spoil The Day

Biola Volleyball cruises through the first two sets, but the Warriors get a reverse sweep.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — A reverse sweep bit Biola in the heel on Saturday as it hosted Westmont College in a PacWest Conference competition. The Eagles won the first two sets powered by a strong service game, taking a 25-22 win in set one and even more impressive 25-15 win in set two.

The Eagles' serve fell off later in the match though as a total of 12 service errors soured the once-happy spot for BU. The Eagles also struggled in reception later in the match, finding it hard to get a quick, clean pass to set up its initial attack.

That, mixed with a blocking front that was not consistently successful throughout, spelled doom for the Eagles in sets three, four and five. Westmont was able to salvage a win by clinching set three by six points, four by seven points, and the fifth by three.

The Warriors had seven team blocks, compared to just three from BU, and this helped to limit the Eagles' attackers just enough to make a difference. Biola hit .271 for the match, while the opponents from Santa Barbara had by far their best attacking effort of the year with a .346 hitting percentage.

The fourth set was critical to the Westmont comeback. The Warriors made it almost impossible for Biola to create any momentum with an off-the-charts side out percentage of 83 percent.

In the fifth, Westmont kept the momentum firmly on their side by speeding out to a 4-0 lead. Biola clawed back within one goal at 4-3, but then another Westmont run all but sealed the match as they went up 8-3 following a vehemently protested eighth point "touch" call.

Payton Tully landed a team-high 15 kills in the loss. Sierra Leopold was the big standout offensively from the middle. She had 11 kills on just 19 swings, hitting .474 for the match. Leopold's hitting percentage was second only to the efficient offensive effort from Hannah Hanson, who had seven kills on 11 swings with no errors (.636).

The loss drops Biola to 3-9 overall this season and now 1-3 in PacWest Conference play. It was Westmont's first league win of the year as they improved to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in PacWest.

Biola will shake this off as they move on to face Vanguard (4-3, 1-2 PacWest) on the road on Thursday night.
