September 23, 2024

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah---The Biola women's golf team soared to victory at the Westminster Wasatch Invitational. The Eagles' "A" team, led by medalist Melanie Reyes, were the invitational's team Champions with a two-round team score of 608.

Biola's "A" team finished 32-above-par-608 to claim the team title. BU edged second-place Dominican University by one stroke (609) and third-place Westmont by 10 strokes (618). The Eagles ended up surpassing Point Loma by 19 strokes (627).

Biola's "B" team came close to catching PLNU, finishing just six strokes behind the Sea Lions.

"I felt like our lead slipped away quickly today which left us behind most of the day," stated head coach Jane Carr. "The last few holes we were fighting our way back into it. Dominican was playing so well until the last few holes and our team was fighting for every stroke we could get. A few clutch long birdies by Theresa on hole 16 and Laura on hole 2 (her final hole of the day) along with some steady pars from Claire and an incredible up/down to save par by Melanie on hole 18 was enough to take away the win."

Reyes led Biola to victory and recorded a major career milestone - her first collegiate individual victory. The Senior carded par in her first round and 1-above-par in her second to win the invitational (145), finishing one stroke better than second-place Angelica Antonio from Dominican.

"I wasn't expecting it and I'm very happy because it's my first win ever," exclaimed Reyes. "And it's nice to win as a senior at the course where I had my first collegiate tournament four years ago. I'm beyond grateful for all the support I have received from my parents, coaches, loved ones, and teammates. It felt really nice to make them proud out there."

Reyes continued, "I felt loose and free out there. On the last hole, I noticed I was a bit more tense but I tried grounding and reassuring myself. I was so stoked that I made a clutch putt to secure my win."

Carr added, "It is really hard to win tournaments which makes a win that much more special. The greatest joy today was watching Melanie, who is a senior this year, win on the course she first played as a freshman. She has trusted the process, worked hard, and really tried to learn from her past experiences. To see that all come together for her today was one of the greatest joys for me as a coach."

Theresa Shaw finished as the Eagles' second-best golfer, tied for 10th with a two-round score of 153. Following Theresa Shaw was Laura Ortiz and Claire Shubin (T18th, 155) and Karis Haltom (T41, 165).

Abigale Morris led the way for Biola's "B" team, finishing 13th with a two-round score of 154. Emily Cons was next-best on the leaderboard, finishing tied for 26th (157). Following Cons was Rachel Shaw (T31, 160), Hailey Hays (T38, 164) and Mailinh Vu (T47, 168).

Biola returns home to prepare for their next tournament, the NCAA West Regional Preview, at the Tacosa Golf Club. The NCAA West Regional Preview begins Monday, September 30th.
