Jungmichel Carries the Torch

Stefan Jungmichel is carrying the torch for the Biola men’s track and field program at the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.

May 22, 2024

LA MIRADA---Stefan Jungmichel is carrying the torch for the Biola men's track and field program at the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.

"We are excited for the opportunity Stefan has ahead of him," commented head coach Sean Henning. "The season has gone very well and we are grateful for the health he has had up until this point. One of our big goals this fall and spring was to make him more explosive and powerful, and that has happened. He has run personal bests in the 100, 110 hurdles, and 400. We also wanted to see consistency in his performances, and for the most part that has happened. Lastly, we wanted to time things well so that he would be at his best in the month of May. We believe that is the case."

Jungmichel heads to Emporia, Kansas to compete in the decathlon for his third-consecutive year. The first time Jungmichel advanced to the NCAA DII Track & Field National Championships was in 2022 with the Queens University of Charlotte track and field program. In 2022, Jungmichel finished 12th with 6826 points.

2022-23 was Jungmichel's first year at Biola and he was able to make it back to the National Championships where he recorded a personal best of 7,280 points in the decathlon. The Graduate Student's fourth-place finish earned him First Team All-American honors.

Jungmichel currently ranks fifth in the nation and first in the west region in the decathlon with his season-best of 7279 points. He scored his season-best of 7279 points at the Bryan Clay Invitational where he finished third of 14 athletes in the B group.

"When you finish fourth in the nation in 2023, it would only make sense to have a goal of surpassing that finish in 2024," stated Henning. "We know the competition is extremely high in the decathlon and there are so many amazing athletes Stefan gets to compete against. The focus will be executing well in the things he can control, and staying steady with his emotions. Additionally, we are hoping Stefan competes in a way that honors the Lord, brings Him fame, and inspires others through his character as an athlete."

Jungmichel didn't participate in the decathlon at the 2024 PacWest Championships but he was All-PacWest in pole vault where he finished second with a mark of 4.43m.

Additionally, Jungmichel holds Biola Track & Field program records in the decathlon (7,280 PTS), 110m hurdles (14.79) and 60m hurdles (8.31). He was also named Biola Athletics 2023-24 Male Athlete of the Year.

Henning closed with, "It will be an exciting two days of competition, and it has been such a pleasure coaching Stefan over these past two years."

Jungmichel begins the decathlon tomorrow, Thursday May 23 at 8:30 a.m. PT (10:30 a.m. CT) at the Welch Stadium.
