Gearing Up for PacWest Championships

The Biola track & field teams are gearing up to compete in the 2024 PacWest Championships, taking place at the Westmont Track in Santa Barbara, California.

LA MIRADA—The Biola track & field teams are gearing up to compete in the 2024 PacWest Championships, taking place at the Westmont Track (Apr. 26-27).

The Eagles have 106 entries spread across 36 events in the two-day conference championship. 

Seven of BU's 2024 runners have NCAA Provisional times including Bethany Mapes (5000m, 10k), Britta Holmberg (3000S), Maggie Williams (800m), Susi Bruennig (5000m, 3000S), Lynette Ruiz (5000m, 10k), Charlie Bailey (3000S) and Stefan Jungmichel (Decathlon). Mapes, Ruiz and Bruennig lead the Eagles' with two provisional times each.

Jungmichel is Biola's highest-ranked athlete. The Graduate Student is fourth-best in the nation in Decathlon with 7279 points. Bruennig is the 18th-best runner in Division II in the 3000m steeplechase. Mapes and Williams made it into the top 30 of runners in DII in their events. Mapes is the 30th-best in the 5000m and 10k. Williams is 30th-best in the 800m.

More nationally-ranked runners are Holmberg (31st, 3000S), Ruiz (44th, 5000m), Ruiz (33rd, 10k) and Bailey (31st, 3000S).

Additionally, Biola had broken 11 school records this season and four are in events that BU is participating in. Jayden Bennett, Matthew Kaloustian, Dylon Lovely and Donovan Tommy have the record in the 4x100 (41.25). Mapes owns program records in the 5000m (16:50.87) and 3000m (9:54.02). Melt von Molendorff broke the school record in the 5000m (14:27.56).

Bailey holds the men's program record in the 3000m (8:22.21).

Biola returns seven All-PacWest athletes, including Reanna Maroon (pole vault), Caleb Pook (pole vault), Holmberg (3000S), Bailey (3000S), Ruiz (10k), Maggie Williams (800m) and Mapes (5000m). Ruiz was the PacWest Champion of the 10,000m run with a speedy time of 35:28.95).

BU is also returning two All-Americans: Jungmichel in Decathlon (First Team) and Williams in the 800m (Second Team).

In 2023, Biola's women finished second of seven teams with 153.50 points. BU's men were fifth of six squads with 47.50 points.
