Whitman Homers Twice in Game One

James Whitman brought the highlight to start Saturday with two home runs but the Eagles fell on the road.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Biola's series against No. 15 Westmont (31-11-3, 22-4-1, PacWest) continued in Santa Barbara on Saturday. The doubleheader featured another intense battle but it was the Warriors to claim game one with a late rally for a 7-5 win.

The Eagles (20-24-1, 10-16 PacWest) were the ones to move ahead early, beginning with the bat of James Whitman. The sophomore opened up the scoring for either team with a solo homer in the second frame.

The third inning began with more Biola offense, as Jonathan Smith reached second on a double to right-center. A walk and sacrifice bunt followed for runners on second and third with one out. Wyatt Duncan grabbed the first RBI with a sac fly and Noah Ruiz secured the next with a single, scoring Austin Carrillo. The two-run frame made for a 3-0 BU lead.

The game was equalized in the fourth with a rally from Westmont. Two BU errors aided a three-run rally for the host squad, evening the game at the halfway point.

With two outs in the sixth, Biola retook control. Once again, it was off the bat of Whitman who left the yard again. This time he brought a teammate along with him for a two-RBI home run to open up a 5-3 advantage with his 12th homer of 2024.

BU kept the Warriors silent in the bottom of the sixth but the comeback came through in the seventh and eighth. WC pulled together six singles and took advantage of another BU error for four runs between the seventh and eighth frames for a 7-5 edge.

Ruiz went 2-4 at the dish on Saturday, marking his 17th multi-hit effort of the season.

Game two is underway at Westmont, as the Eagles look to split the day.
