Eagles Earn Team Win over No. 15 Westmont

From top to bottom, Biola found success on the way to a 9-4 victory on Friday afternoon.

LA MIRADA --- The BU offense bounced back in game two on Friday, delivering a 9-4 win at Eagles Diamond. Biola (20-23-1, 10-15 PacWest) took down the nationally ranked No. 15 Westmont Warriors (30-11-3, 21-4-1 PacWest) in the seven-inning affair.

"It was good to get the win," commented Head Coach Jesse Rodgers. "We did not play perfect baseball but we played relatively clean and we did a good job absorbing their punches, answering back, and staying in the moment."

The big punch from the Warriors came in the fourth frame. BU led 4-0 with a great third inning at bat but WC responded. A grand slam knotted the game at four with a single swing, erasing a comfy Biola edge.

Sam Lisiak had the answer in the next half inning, driving the first pitch beyond the center field wall. The solo shot immediately put the Eagles back in front and stalled any momentum the Warriors had.

The BU bats continued to go to work and rebuild its lead. The team scored in every inning past the second, while going ahead by five at 9-4.

The offensive strength was a team effort with all nine batters reaching base at least once and eight-of-nine hitters recording at least one RBI. 10 hits and five walks turned into the nine runs.

On the mound, Jake Anderson and Gabe Magallan combined for the seven innings pitched. Anderson drew the start and earned the win with four frames and four strikeouts.

Magallan nabbed his seventh save of 2024 with three scoreless frames in relief. He struck out four through 12 batters faced and worked around three hits allowed to keep the Biola lead.

Lisiak was efficient at the plate, going two-for-three with a walk, while scoring three times.

James Whitman and Noah Ruiz added extra-base hits with one double each, helping the Eagles to their first run of the fifth inning. Ruiz also notched a pair of steals for the second time this season.

Jonathan Kumai extended his hitting streak on Friday, reaching seven-straight games with a base knock.

The Eagles will continue their series against Westmont on the road on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am.
