Cody Deals Against No. 15 Westmont

Carson Cody was stout on the mound for Biola but the team fell to the 15th-ranked Warriors on Friday.

LA MIRADA --- The renewed rivalry between Biola (19-23-1, 9-15 PacWest) and Westmont (30-10-3, 21-3-1 PacWest) continued on Friday, as the two teams kicked off a doubleheader at Eagles Diamond. The PacWest matchup went the way of No. 15 Westmont in a 4-1 finish but Carson Cody shined for the squad with four nearly flawless frames.

Andrew Zittel was handed the ball to start the game for the Eagles. The lefty worked his way through five innings, while putting three zeros up on the scoreboard. He struck out three, while giving up four runs but only allowed two earned runs.

The BU offense got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, looking to cut into the 4-0 Westmont lead. Jonathan Kumai created the opportunity with a double to left-center, putting a runner in scoring position with one out. Austin Carrillo delivered for his teammate, singling home Kumai to bring BU within three.

Cody took over and toed the rubber starting in the sixth and kept the Eagles within reach. Four innings flew by with Cody in control. Only two runners reached base from the sixth through the ninth for Westmont, as Cody put up a zero in each frame, while striking out four.

"Carson has put a ton of work in, so it is good to see it show up on the field," said Head Coach Jesse Rodgers. "He did well not having to work through much adversity, pounding the strike zone and keeping us there to give us a chance to come back."

The four scoreless innings made for Cody's fifth-straight outing without a run allowed.

The Eagles pulled together for one last push in the bottom of the ninth, needing at least three runs to tie. Taylor Justus belted a double to left field to get things started and was followed with AJ Ortiz drawing a walk. Runners on first and second was all the Eagles could muster, as Westmont closed out the game for the 4-1 final score.

Three Eagles posted multiple hits in the contest including Wyatt Duncan, Carrillo, and Kumai, as the team outhit the visitors, 8-6.

Game two on Friday is set to start at 3:00 pm at Eagles Diamond.
