WAIMEA, Hawai`i--- The Biola women's golf team continued to navigate the Mauna Lani North Course with grace and precision as they wrapped up the second round of the PacWest Championships.
Biola concluded their first round of the conference championships on Monday with a tournament-leading team score of 318 and continued to bring the intensity in their second round.Â
BU earned their lowest single-round score in the PacWest Championships in program history, carding 297. The Eagles shaved a whopping 21 strokes from their first round score to achieve a 615 two-round score and keep their status as tournament-leaders.
Biola leads second place ART U by nine strokes (624) and third place Hawaii Hilo by 10 (625).Â
The Eagles were led by no other than Brady Turnquist who cranked up the heat in her second round. Turnquist scored three-under-par 69 which tied her for second on the leaderboard (148). The senior's round of 69 is the lowest individual single-round score at the PacWest Championships in Biola's program history.
"I'm so impressed with Brady today," stated head coach Jane Carr. "A solid round of golf to anchor her team. She just missed a birdie on 18 after a 155 yard fairway bunker shot that put her 12-15 feet from the pin. I don't know many players in this field that have the shots she has."
Turnquist leads the field in par-scoring with 25 pars. She also has four birdies.
Turnquist is just two strokes behind the PacWest Championships individual leader from Hawaii Pacific, Shuiyun He, who has a two-round score of 146.Â
Melanie Reyes was Biola's next-best on the scoreboard, placing sixth with a two-round score of 152. Reyes bettered her first round score by six strokes, carding one-above-par 73 in her second round. She also leads Biola with five birdies.
"Melanie was two under coming into the last three holes when she had a challenging 16th hole," reflected Carr. "She came right back with a par on hole 17."Â
Carr continued, "I was so impressed with her poise and resilience down the stretch. She is an amazing athlete and it has been so rewarding to watch her become more confident and steady down the stretch."
Freshman Theresa Shaw was BU's third-best golfer after the second round, recording three-above-par 75 in round two. Her two-round score of 154 placed her T7 on the leaderboard. Shaw also has four birdies so far.
"Theresa is a bright spot on this team," commented Carr. "She came through for us today and that isn't easy to do for a freshman. Nothing phases her, she is just steady and that is what we needed from her today."
Rachel Shaw and Karis Haltom were Biola's final two golfers. Shaw recorded 82 in her second round and placed T21 (163). Meanwhile, Haltom carded 80 and finished T27 after round two (165).
"Rachel and Karis knew we needed one of them," Carr stated. "Rachel was struggling on the front nine, but she is persistent. Even though we didn't use her score she showed this team what is possible when you don't give up."
Biola has one round to go which is set to begin tomorrow Wednesday, Apr. 17 at 11:30 a.m. PT (8:30 a.m. HT).
