Finding Success Against Tough Competition

The track & field teams faced some tough competition on Thursday, dividing up between the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate and the Bryan Clay Invite.

LA MIRADA—The Biola track & field teams faced some tough competition on Thursday, dividing up between the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate and the Bryan Clay Invite. 

The Eagles competed in 16 events at Long Beach State's Pacific Coast Intercollegiate. 

Matthew Kaloustian led the power squad with two top-half finishes in the 100m and 200m. The Freshman recorded a personal best in the 100m dash, finishing 45th of 114 athletes with a time of 10.70. 

Kaloustian's second top-half finish was 31st of 98 individuals in the 200m dash (21.96). Jack Sapyta also had a top-half finish in the 200m, finishing 48th with a time of 22.27.

A.J. Antonio had a strong performance in the high jump where he was tied for 12th of 30 athletes and recorded a distance of 1.91m.

Jaden Murray led Biola's women with a top-half finish in the 400m dash. The Freshman placed 29th of 62 athletes with a speedy time of 58.26.

The Eagles had the most entries in the men's and women's 200m dashes. 

Behind Kaloustian and Sapyta in the 200m was Donovan Tommy (64th, 22.55), Dylon Lovely (71st, 22.76), Jayden Bennett (77th, 22.84), Tyler Poltl (81st, 22.96), Dominic Castro (87th, 23.30), Richie Davenport (88th, 23.36) and Angelo Legaspe (96th, 24.31).

Audrey Mousa led Biola's women in the 200m dash with a quick time of 25.88 which placed her 60th of 109 individuals. Following Mousa was Kelaiah Moore (70th, 26.18), Murray (84th, 26.59), Rebecca Gonzalez (90th, 26.91) and Ariana Quintana (103rd, 27.35).

Meanwhile, Joley Sproul and Stefan Jungmichel were battling it out in the heptathlon and decathlon at the Bryan Clay Invite. The women's heptathlon had six groups competing throughout the day and the men's decathlon had four.

Sproul ended the day 6th in her group of 11 athletes with 2,776 points. Her strongest event was the high jump where she placed third, reaching a height of 1.61m which was also a personal best.

Additionally, she placed eighth in the 100m hurdles (15.64), seventh in the shot put (10.52m) and eighth in the 200m (27.07).

Sproul has three events remaining (long jump, javelin and 800m) which she will finish tomorrow.


Jungmichel ended the first day in third place of the 14 athletes in his group (3806). His strongest showing was in the high jump where he finished third (1.90m).

Additionally, Jungmichel placed fourth in the shot put (12.54m), fifth in the long jump (6.94m), and sixth in the 100m (11.02) and 400m dashes (50.36).

Jungmichel has five events remaining in the decathlon including the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, 1500m, and javelin which he will complete tomorrow. 

The Eagles have an incredibly busy day tomorrow (Friday, Apr. 12) where they will compete at three different meets. They will begin Long Beach State's Pacific Coast Intercollegiate and the La Verne Distance Carnival and continue the Bryan Clay Invite.
