Reyes Records an Eagle, Eagles Fight Through Day One

The women’s golf team finished the first day of the Desert Invite 11th of 19 teams with a team score of 318. Melanie Reyes recorded an eagle and Thersea Shaw led Biola in the first round.

TUCSON, Ariz.---The Biola women's golf team finished the first day of the Desert Invite 11th of 19 teams with a team score of 318. 

Biola battled three of the Women's Golf Coaches Association's (WGCA) nationally-ranked teams and faced one receiving votes (RV). The nationally-ranked squads in attendance were No. 7 West Texas A&M, No. 17 Cal State San Marcos, No. 22 Oklahoma Christian and RV Cal State East Bay.

Biola led nationally-ranked No. 17 CSU San Marcos by four strokes. Oklahoma Christian, nationally-ranked #22, led the invitational after the first round with a team score of 301. They were followed by second place St. Mary's (303) and tied for third #7 West Texas A&M, RV Cal State East Bay and Western New Mexico (308). 

Theresa Shaw paced Biola with a first round score of three-above-par 75, tying for ninth place of 102 individuals. Theresa Shaw and Rachel Shaw led BU in birdies, both recording four throughout the 18 holes.

Melanie Reyes was the second-highest for Biola on the leaderboard, tied for 30th, with a first round score of 79. Reyes was one of four players in the field to card an eagle.

Behind Reyes was Rachel Shaw (T54, 81), Brady Turnquist (T66, 83) and Hailey Hays (T72, 84). Turnquist recorded a birdie in her first round.

Karis Haltom competed as an individual. Haltom was T42 after the first round with a score of 80. She also had a birdie in her first round.

The Eagles will play their last round of the Desert Invite tomorrow, April 2 at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon.
