Not Far Away

The Eagles opened up a non-conference series against Fresno Pacific with a pair of narrow losses on Monday.

FRESNO, Calif. --- Biola baseball began the week following Easter with a four-game road series against Fresno Pacific (16-12). Monday's doubleheader kicked off the festivities but the two games got away from the Eagles (15-20-1). Game one finished with the Sunbirds holding the edge at 5-4 and game two followed with a seven-inning 6-3 final score in favor of FPU once again.

Monday's contests were not for conference play, as the two teams will battle for their conference record later this month in La Mirada.

The day began with a bright outlook. The BU bats got off to a hot start with the first three batters reaching base. The Eagles got on the board quickly and added more with a long ball from Andrew Lujan. The designated hitter left the yard on a 1-2 count, building a 3-0 lead for Biola in the top of the first.

FPU responded in the middle innings to inch ahead. The host squad put together five runs between the third and fifth frames to gain a 5-3 edge.

Biola looked to bounce back in the seventh inning and loaded the bases with one out. Noah Ruiz brought BU within one with a single through the right side. The RBI hit kept the bases loaded but the Sunbirds worked out of the dangerous spot with a crucial double play.

Down by one, the Eagles looked for an equalizer in the eighth and ninth frames. Taylor Justus put Biola in a good position with a double with two outs in the eighth and reached third on a Jonthan Kumai single but an out followed to end the frame. In the final inning, Ruiz got on base with a single and touched second on a balk but once again the third out came with no damage done.

Ruiz was stellar in game one, going 4-5 at the plate. His hitting streak with multiple hits reached five games, as his season average peaked at .339.

Jake Anderson capped off the game with a strong relief effort. The righty dealt the final 10 outs, while only allowing one base runner and striking out five.

Game two saw the Sunbirds jump in front early with four runs in the first frame.

BU battled back in the second, rallying with two hits and two walks. Jonathan Smith came up clutch with two outs, bringing home Gavin Ayers and Sam Lisiak for a two-RBI single.

FPU earned one back in the third and the fifth to extend its lead to 6-2. Lisiak grabbed a run for Biola on his own merit with his second homer of 2024. The solo shot brought the scoreline to 6-3 but nothing doing in the ninth left it there for the final.

Isaiah Leon and AJ Ortiz picked up extra-base hits in game two with each student-athlete logging a double.

Biola will be back in action in Fresno on Tuesday for another non-conference doubleheader against FPU beginning at 12:00 pm.
