Justus Stays Hot

Taylor Justus maintained his strong pace at the plate, while the Eagles fell at home.

LA MIRADA --- Thursday provided a new day but a similar result with another doubleheader between Biola (15-17-1, 7-11 PacWest) and Hawaii Pacific (18-15, 9-12 PacWest). Game one ended nearly the same way as it did the day prior, as HPU defeated the Eagles, 9-5.

Taylor Justus shined for the Eagles, extending his hot hitting streak. The BU catcher went 2-4 in game one, including a two-run homer which gave Biola the lead in the fourth inning. He extended his hitting streak to four games, while batting .542 over his last eight games. Justus also has three homers in his last four appearances.

Justus' home run gave the Eagles a jolt in the fourth frame, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead. Isaiah Leon scored first in the inning for BU, cashing in on his leadoff double. Noah Ruiz reached on a single to offer the second run on Justus' big swing.

The next frame brought another BU score with back-to-back singles from Luke Caruso and Jonathan Smith. The duo moved to second and third off a sacrifice bunt from Austin Carillo, enabling a groundout to open a 4-2 BU lead.

Hawaii Pacific made a break for it in the sixth and seventh frames. The visitor's offense found a groove and nabbed four runs between the two innings.

BU looked to respond in the eighth and found success starting with two outs. Ruiz got to first with a single and Lujan poked one the opposite way for a double. Lujan's two-base knock brought home Ruiz and put the Eagles within one at 6-5, while he represented the potential tying run on second.

HPU worked its way out of the eighth and added insurance scores in the ninth. Three runs gave the Sharks a necessary cushion on the way to the 9-5 finish.

Bobby Brown drew the start on the mound for BU and tossed six innings on Thursday. The righty delivered four scoreless frames with only two earned runs allowed.

Biola will look to bounce back in game two on Thursday, set to begin at 3:10 pm.
