Home Runs Rain Down

A trio of long balls guided the Eagles to a 6-2 victory in a rescheduled matchup against Chaminade.

LA MIRADA --- Biola found blue skies on Monday afternoon to pull off a single game contest against Chaminade (12-19, 5-11 PacWest), which was rescheduled from Saturday. The Eagles (15-14-1, 7-8 PacWest) came out swinging with three home runs, helping the team to a 6-2 win over the Silverswords.

Gilbert Lopez got the Eagles moving in the right direction with his work on the mound. The BU starter faced 18 Silverswords batters without giving up a score. He put together back-to-back three-up, three-down innings to end his day with five innings pitched, five strikeouts and a win to his name.

The BU defense got the job done with two inning-ending double plays. In the second and third frames, Lopez got out of a jam first with a double play from Noah Ruiz to Wyatt Duncan, then from Jonathan Kumai to Duncan.

Big swings put the Eagles ahead on offense. Taylor Justus got it started in the second inning with his second homer of the year. The catcher pulled the ball over the left field fence, bringing home Ruiz alongside him for a two-run shot and a two-run Biola lead.

It was James Whitman's turn in the fourth frame, taking the first pitch of the inning and sending it to the moon. Kumai reached base later in the fourth and moved to second with a stolen base. Luke Caruso picked up the RBI with a single for a 4-0 BU lead.

CUH responded with a pair of runs in the sixth but the Biola defense limited the damage. With the bases loaded and just one out, Carson Speegle forced a grounder to third and once again BU turned an inning ending double play from Ruiz to Kumai to Duncan.

Biola rebuilt its four-run advantage with the long ball. Justus earned his way on with a walk and Kumai stepped up to the plate. The senior launched the ball down the left field line and snuck it into fair territory for his second homer of 2024. The two-run homer put the Eagles up 6-2 at the end of the sixth.

From there, the BU relievers took care of business with three scoreless frames. Speegle, Josh Eigenbrodt, Carson Cody, and Gabe Magallan polished off the win for Biola.

Justus had himself a day, going 2-2 with a double and home run, while reaching base four times by adding a pair of walks.

Kumai and Austin Carillo impacted the base paths with a steal apiece.

The Eagles will only have one day off before they are back on the diamond, taking on Hawaii Pacific at home on Wednesday with the doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
