Lightning Only Delays Victory

The Eagles claimed the win on Monday afternoon against Hawaii Hilo despite multiple lightning delays.

March 18, 2024

Box Score LA MIRADA --- Biola women's tennis  (11-5) did not relent on Monday in a drawn out battle on the courts due to lightning delays. It was Alexandria Mann to deliver the deciding blow, helping the Eagles to a 4-3 win over the visiting Hawaii Hilo Vulcans (5-3).

The match came down to the final singles matchup between Mann and Julia Barden of the Vulcans. The two fought into the third set, trading scores of 6-3 in the first two sets but then faced another obstacle. The weather halted their match twice in the final set.

At the first break, Barden held a 4-3 lead in the deciding set, as the team's were even at three on the scoreboard. Mann came back with determination for a 6-5 edge, needing just one game to win her match and the team's match against UHH. Then another delay hit. Once the coast was clear, they returned to the court and Mann completed the win in a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 fashion.

Mann clinched the match with her 11th singles win of the season.

The start of the day favored the Vulcans, who jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a dominant doubles showing. Courts No. 2 and No. 3 went the way of the visitors, leaving the first court unfinished with BU ahead.

Biola was quick to answer in singles, as Colbeyshae Emery grabbed her third-straight singles win. The senior gave up just three games in her straight-sets win, 6-1, 6-2.

Next came Lilly McNeill with another sweep for Biola. The righty posted a 6-0 set to kick off her match and then followed through with a 6-4 win in set number two.

Kailee Mazzeo was not far behind from the No. 3 spot. A third-straight singles win for Biola was mirrored 6-4 sets, as Mazzeo moved to 9-4 in singles matches this season.

A 3-1 lead for Biola swung to a tie at 3-3 with the next two singles matches going the way of the Vulcans, setting up Mann for the match-clinching win.

The Eagles will be back in action on the road at Azusa Pacific on Saturday at 10:00 am.
