March 16, 2024

LOS ANGELES, Calif. ---The Biola track and field teams competed in over 20 different events on Saturday. The Eagles had 45 top 10 finishes and rounded out the meet with 20 podium finishes between the men's and women's teams. Not only did the Biola Eagles have success as a team, but multiple personal and season bests were set.

Biola was the headliner of the 4x100 relay races as the Eagles took the gold in both the men's and women's races.

"Both men's 4x100 relays did awesome job," commented heach coach Sean Henning. "The A-Team set the school record by about one second which is a big deal. First relay of the year, low-key meet without a ton of competition, really good. Three freshmen, and one senior on that team as well. The other relay had two freshman, a sophomore, and a junior.  Matt and Donovan ran great in the hundred, and Matt continued that success in the 200 with a really strong last hundred."

Jayden Bennett, Donovan Tommy, Dylon Lovely and Matthew Kaloustian were Biola's A Team who stood atop of the podium and set a program record with their speedy time of 41.26. Joaquin Ramirez, Jack Sapyta, Tyler Poltl and Dominic Castro finished third in the 4x100 as Biola's B team (42.42).

Priscilla Jones, Audrey Mousa, Rebecca Gonzalez and Kelaiah Moore knit together a 48.48 time to bring in the first BU podium finish of the day.

"With the ladies, the relay was also really solid," stated Henning. "It was one second faster than they started at last year with very minimal work. They will continue to improve and possibly make a run at our school record."

Stefan Jungmichel recorded a season best time of 15.05 in the men's 110m hurdles which placed him second in the event. Jack Ferrence finished just over two seconds later and rang up another top 10 finish for BU.

Hannah Hanson recorded a 15.17 time in the women's 100m hurdles, giving her a fifth place finish. Kathryn Thompson and Gillian Doplemore hit marks that would put them in a position to bring in two more top 10 finishes for the Eagles.

Ariana Quintana recorded a personal record in the women's 400m dash with her 1:00.18 mark. Her finish on Saturday beat out her previous record by .49 seconds. Jaden Murray brought home the silver in the women's event with her 58.17 time and Sapyta got things done on the men's side with his 49.63 podium finish.

Five Eagles found their way onto the top 10 finishers in the 100m dash events. Moore's 12.48 time earned her a bronze, while Gonzalez and Mousa finished just behind her in the top 10. For the men, Kaloustian and Tommy brought in two more top 10 finishes as they crossed the finish line just .01 seconds apart from each other at 10.77 and 10.78.

Joaquin Ramirez and Doplemore represented Biola in the 400m hurdles events. Ramirez placed fifth bringing in the 15th top 10 finish of the day for track events and Doplemore recorded a new season best on the women's side at 1:14.82.

"Kelaiah, Audrey, and Rebecca ran solid in the hundred and continue to develop in that event," stated Henning. Mousa won the women's 200m dash with a time of 25.18. Jones and Murray joined Mousa in in the top 10.

Kaloustian recorded a second place finish in the 200m with his new personal record of 21.52.

AJ Antonio and Maria Vidal Poy were the third place finishers in the long jump events. Vidal Poy hit the 4.82m mark and Antonio recorded a personal best with his 6.67m mark which topped his previous record by .22 meters.

Jungmichel finished in second place in the discus throw event where his 39.51 throw recorded his second season best of the day. Nathan Wilson and Ferrance's throws were good for two more top 10 placements. On the women's side of the discus throw, Leah Gilmore, Amaya Heard, Laura Brennan and India Young each placed in the top 10.

Nina Navarette's 10.76m mark in the triple jump became the Eagles' fourth podium finish in field events. She did not stop there, as she recorded another second place finish in the pole vault with her teammate, Reanna Maroon, right behind her in third place.

Biola continued their success in the field events as two Eagles led the men's pole vault event. Jungmichel sat at the top of the podium with his 4.40m jump and Caleb Pook came in second place with his season best, 4.25m jump. Alex White and Ferrence both came out in the top 10, adding to the Eagles record.

Kathryn Thompson not only took home the gold in the women's high jump, but she also set a new personal record of 1.57m.

Jones won the women's shot put event with her 12.79m throw. Brennan also made her way onto the podium with her 11.95m third place throw. Luke Hanson set a new personal record in the men's shot put and joined Wilson in ringing up two more top 10 placements.

The Eagles head back home with their many accomplishments as they prepare for their next meet on March 22 at the Mangrum Invitational in San Marcos.
