A Shutout Success

Biola Women's Tennis overpowers the visiting Western New Mexico Mustangs.

March 14, 2024

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. — Playing in its final non-conference matchup of 2024, Biola Women's Tennis defeated Western New Mexico 7-0 at the Biola Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.

The Eagles earned straight-set victories in all five singles matches and won by walkover in the sixth single match. Similarly, Biola dominated doubles play with a pair of 6-1 wins in the second and third flights, while the first court went unfinished.

The win is Biola's sixth in its last eight matches and helps push out the sour taste of defeat at the hands of Hawaii Pacific two days ago.

Kailee Mazzeo's singles win in the no. 2 spot is her third-consecutive singles victory and helps her to improve to 7-4 on the year. She's now 2-0 while playing no. 2, beating her opponent 6-4 and 6-2 on this day.

She and Isabella Chavarria combined for one of Biola's two doubles victories, taking home the win in the third flight over WNMU's Andreea Arnautu and Caini Wang. The freshman pairing improved to 5-4 together this season with Thursday's win.

Just one minute after Mazzeo and Chavarria concluded their 6-1 win Colbeyshae Emery and Lilly McNeill clamped down on court two to clinch the doubles point for BU. They've been Biola's most successful pairing this year, simply in terms of overall record, with a now 8-3 overall mark.

Emery and Alexandria Mann were supremely impressive in singles play, locking down their match victories in 50 minutes or less. They both played extremely well and only lost two games in total, completely overpowering the Mustangs.

Chavarria and Breanna Hiebert both also won singles matches to secure a shutout for the Eagles. Hiebert won a grueling match in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

From here on out it is all PacWest Conference competition for Head Coach David Goodman's side. The Eagles improved to 9-5 overall with this victory. Their next contest is Saturday at noon against Metro State University - Denver (3-8).
