Errors Plague Eagles in Game One

Five errors aided five unearned runs, as Biola fell in game one at Hawaii Hilo, 7-6.

HILO, Hawaii --- Rain dampened the day at Hawaii Hilo on Friday, as the BU baseball squad (8-6-1, 0-1 PacWest) battled the Vulcans in its PacWest opener. Game one featured a rain delay, which stalled the BU momentum and UHH (9-10, 2-3 PacWest) came back for a 7-6 finish in the Vulcans' favor.

Biola was all over the Vulcans in the early going, piling on five runs in the first three frames. The big rally came in the second, as Noah Ruiz and Taylor Justus offered back-to-back doubles to put BU on the board.

The runs continued to flow with singles from Luke Caruso and Jonathan Smith later in the at bat. Austin Carillo added the last RBI for the Eagles with a sacrifice bunt, as the team took a 4-1 lead.

The momentum remained with the BU offense as the game shifted to the third frame. Wyatt Duncan led off the inning with a double to left center, instantly putting a runner in scoring position. James Whitman moved him to third with a single and a ground ball from AJ Ortiz scored Duncan for a 5-1 BU advantage.

The rain was the next featured part of the contest, as the showers halted the game entering the fourth. The stoppage of play slowed a solid outing from Bobby Brown, who worked through the first three frames with three hits allowed and one unearned run.

On the day, Brown pushed through and offered five innings pitched with only one earned run allowed. The BU starter tossed a pair of strikeouts and worked around seven hits given up.

A three-spot in the fifth put the Vulcans right back in the game, trailing by one at 5-4. On the other end, the Eagles went quiet on offense with five-straight scoreless frames.

In the meantime, UHH continued to climb with two runs in the eighth. The pair of unearned runs gave the Vulcans the lead, entering the ninth.

Brown would not go quietly though, earning his way on as the leadoff man with a walk. A wild pitch moved him to scoring position, as the team needed just one to keep the game alive. Back-to-back outs followed, putting the pressure on Ortiz. The third baseman delivered with a single, bringing in Brown and extending the game at a 6-6 tie.

The rally stopped there and the UHH had their turn to end it in the bottom of the ninth. The host squad got the job done with walkoff home run.

BU errors plagued the squad, as five fielding mishaps gave way to five unearned runs on Friday.

Whitman was a bright spot in the BU lineup, going 4-5 at the plate with four singles and one run scored. Ruiz also reached base in four-of-five plate appearances, grabbing two hits and two walks in game one.

A seven-inning game two is slated to start later in the evening of Friday.
