Never Out of Reach

Biola pulled off another huge comeback on Thursday to grab game two at MSU Denver.

DENVER, Colo. --- The Eagles (4-0) showed their resilience and offensive firepower with a doubleheader sweep against MSU Denver (1-4) on Thursday. The team overcame a nine-run deficit in game one and then an eight-run deficit in game two to steal the day. In game two, Biola scored 10-unanswered runs to defeat the Roadrunners, 14-12.

Game two began with a bang, as the top of the first boasted three homers from BU. Bobby Brown opened the game with a homer to center, before Wyatt Duncan brought two home with a long ball and was followed immediately by a solo shot from James Whitman. The BU squad picked up right where they left off in game one and opened up a 4-0 lead without recording a single out.

The second inning spelled misfortune for Biola though, as the Roadrunners rattled off 11 runs. 16 batters came to the plate for MSU Denver, while the hosting squad grabbed six hits during its offensive outburst.

Duncan cut into the 12-4 MSU Denver lead with a solo homer in the fourth. The senior left the yard for the second time in game two and for the fourth time in this young season.

The comeback effort continued in the fifth with a double from Isaiah Leon, putting Gavin Ayers on third base. Sam Lisiak and Austin Carillo put the ball in play for RBIs on back-to-back plays, drawing the team within five with two innings remaining.

The sixth started with good, smart baseball, as the Eagles earned a pair of walks before loading the bases with a single. Then Gavin Ayers happened. The BU center fielder crushed the ball over the fence for a grand slam, putting the Eagles within one run of their opponent.

Two batters later, Lisiak got a hold of a pitch and knotted the game with the team's sixth homer of the contest.

Biola was finally held silent on offense in the seventh and the Eagles returned the favor on defense, forcing extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, two quick outs put the Eagles back but Jonathan Kumai singled to keep the inning alive. The transfer second baseman nabbed second and third, while Brown walked at the plate. An intentional walk to AJ Ortiz loaded the bases with Andrew Lujan due up. A walk followed, granting Kumai free passage to home, representing the go-ahead score. A passed ball added an insurance run as the Eagles owned a 14-12 lead with three outs remaining.

The relief effort from the Biola bullpen was spectacular as Gabe Magallan picked up his second save of the season. The sophomore worked around a leadoff walk and struck out two to seal the win.

The righty followed up on standout showings from Tristan Cazel and Ty Cowley. Cazel delivered three innings on the mound with just one hit given up. The hard throwing right-hander recorded six strikeouts through 12 batters faced. Cowley earned the win with his two frames pitched. The freshman grabbed three strikeouts and did not allow a hit in his two scoreless innings.

Hitters three through eight went to work in game two with each one logging multiple hits. Duncan led the way with three, while Ayers paced the squad with four RBI.

Biola will be back in action on Friday with another doubleheader at MSU Denver beginning at  10:00 am PT.
