BU Takes Down #16 OC in Season Opener

The softball team opened 2024 with an exciting 3-2 win over nationally-ranked No. 16 Oklahoma Christian at Freedom Field.

LA MIRADA—The Biola softball team opened 2024 with an exciting 3-2 win over the NFCA's nationally-ranked No. 16 Oklahoma Christian at Freedom Field. 

Raylene Roybal had the swing that changed everything. The redshirt Senior produced a solo homerun in the fifth, which ended up being the go-ahead run and difference maker in the Eagles' 3-2 victory.

Oklahoma Christian scored first in the second inning, but the Eagles quickly matched their run in the bottom of the second. 

With one out, Alexa Medley shifted the momentum BU's way. The Freshman got the inning going for Biola with a well-placed bunt to OC's third baseman. Kaityln Hawkins then pushed her over to second with a single to left field.

The Eagles then recorded their second out of the inning, but Kennadie Tsue picked up her teammates with a two-out single to right field that scored speedy Medley from second base and tied the game up 1-1.

After a scoreless third, Oklahoma Christian scored again in the top of the fourth but the Eagles were able to match their run once again in the bottom of the inning.

BU scored one run in the bottom of the fourth off of three hits. Makayla Jordan led off with a base knock to left field and then Medley tallied her second hit of the afternoon with a single to the pitcher. Biola continued to record their first and second outs of the inning off pop ups which once again brought Tsue up with two outs and two runners on base.

And again, Tsue cashed in for her team. The Freshman singled up the middle to score Jordan and successfully tie the game up, 2-2.

Biola came back with some solid defense, holding Oklahoma Christian in the top of the fifth and went on to take the lead in the bottom of the inning.

Roybal slugged a moonshot over center field that gave the Eagles the 3-2 lead.

The Eagles then defended their home field, holding No. 16 Oklahoma Christian scoreless in the final two innings. Symons, who was in the circle, efficiently kept Biola in the game. The Sophomore rolled two ground balls, collected three flyouts and recorded one strikeout in sixth and seventh.

Kayla Bousquette began the game in the circle for Biola and threw four innings. Bousquette allowed four hits and two runs to score while tossing two strikeouts. Symons entered the game in the fifth inning and closed the game out for BU.

Symons earned her first win of the season and Biola begins 2024 1-0 overall.
