Working Together

Biola baseball completed the opening day sweep with a game two win against the Toros.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles thrived in all aspects of the game on Saturday and kicked off their 2024 season with a pair of victories. Wyatt Duncan brought the offense with a three-run jack and Gabe Magallan shut the door on the mound, as BU defeated CSU Dominguez Hills by a final score of 4-2 in game two.

"It was great to get a couple wins on opening day," said Head Coach Jesse Rodgers. "We pitched really well, played solid defense, and got timely hitting both with two-out base hits and hitting the ball out of the yard."

The Toros came out swinging in hopes of avenging their game one loss and scored with a homer in the first at bat. The visitors left the yard again in the third inning to boast a 2-1 lead.

The two runs on two home runs was all that CSUDH could muster in game two. Gilbert Lopez was the starter for BU and went five innings. He logged seven strikeouts and only allowed one runner to stand on second base.

Duncan helped give Lopez the win with his big hit in the bottom of the fifth. BU's first baseman came to the plate following singles from Bobby Brown and AJ Ortiz. Back-to-back breaking balls in the dirt gave way to a fastball inside and Duncan turned on it and sent it over the left field fence.

At the top of the sixth, Magallan was given the ball with the job of protecting the 4-2 lead. The sophomore did just that. Magallan put away all six batters he faced over the last two innings on his way to the save. Through the two frames, the righty grabbed three strikeouts.

Magallan and Lopez combined to retire 12-straight batters to end the game.

"I'm excited to see what this group can do this season," added Rodgers.

Biola's season continues with a series at MSU Denver beginning on Thursday at 12:00 pm.
