Hanging On

The last tune up game before conference play featured a road, nail-biting win over Hope International.

FULLERTON, Calif. --- Biola baseball showed off its depth on Tuesday night, as the squad got its last chance on the diamond before kicking off its conference schedule. The Eagles battled Hope International on the road and eked out a 10-9 victory.

16 Eagles got into the action on Tuesday with five pitchers and 11 batters in the lineup. A pair of Eagles saw their Biola debut including John Lanterman and Kyle Osterhage.

The team accrued 9 hits to help towards its total of 10 runs. The scoring came early with nine runs within the first three frames.

The big boost came in the second, as seven runners touched home for BU. Two outs came quickly but a pair of walks loaded the bases for Biola. BU scored two off an error and a walk, before Sam Lisiak smacked a double and broke open the lead. Two more runs came across with a single and an error, giving the Eagles an 8-1 advantage after two frames.

Luke Caruso led off the third with his own double and the Eagles were off and running. Lisiak provided another RBI and moved Caruso home with his second double of the contest.

HIU responded with five scores to get back within reach of the Eagles, heading into the sixth inning. BU gained one back in the sixth, but HIU continued to grind and posted two scores in the seventh and eighth to bring the scoreline to 10-9 with one inning left.

Biola was silent on offense for the third-straight inning to keep its lead stagnant after the top of the ninth. The Royals had one more chance to take the lead and put the first two runners on base with a walk and a hit by pitch in the ninth. A sacrifice bunt put the tying run on third and the go-ahead run in scoring position at second base.

Gabe Magallan pulled it together with one out and fanned the last two batters to escape with the save. The final pitch whizzed by the outside corner and got the hitter swinging and missing for the third and final out. The save marked the fourth of the season for Magallan.

The BU bats were disciplined at the plate on Tuesday, picking up nine walks in the contest.

Biola will head out to Hawaii for its next contest, opening PacWest play against Hawaii Hilo at 5:00 pm PT.
