February 18, 2024

IRVINE, Calif.---The Biola track & field teams broke seven school records, had 17 podium finishes and 19 top 10 finishes at the Golden Eagles Invitational.

"There were several personal bests and great performances," noted head coach Sean Henning. "I really enjoyed watching our team support each other through the competition and bring a lot of competitive spirit to the track. The highlight for me was watching some of our male athletes in the 3K pull a couple of teams in to pray with them after the finish of their race. The first thought was to thank the Lord for the great opportunity they had to compete and honor Him with their abilities. That's what we want our program to represent when we are out competing in the world, on the smallest or biggest of stages."

Biola set new program records in the men's distance medley relay, men's 60m hurdles, women's 60m dash, women's 1000m run, men's 1000m run, women's 3000m run and men's 3000m run.

The Eagles were the only team to compete in the men's distance medley relay and made it count, breaking a program record set 53 years ago. Aidan Tomasini, Ben Sonneland, Charles Bailey and Jack Sapyta finished with a speedy time of 10:03.02 which knocked out the previous school record of 10:03.40 set by BU in 1971.

Stefan Jungmichel set the school record in the heptathlon last weekend at the Westmont Indoor Qualifier and this week set a new program record in the men's 60m hurdles with a second place finish and a time of 8.31.

Priscilla Jones matched a school record at last weekend's Westmont Invite (in the 60m) and set a new school record in the 60m dash this weekend at the Golden Eagle Invitational (7.74 and second place).

The men's and women's teams' set program records in the 1000m and 3000m runs. Maggie Williams made the newest record in the 1000m, earning a third place finish, with a time of 2:53.75. On the men's side, Tomasini earned the school record in the 1000m with a time of 2:29.97 which placed him second.

In the 3000m, Bethany Mapes (9:54.02, 2nd place) and Bailey (8:22.21, 4th place) set program records.

Biola collected three first place finishes and seven second and third place finishes.

Nina Navarrette won the triple jump with a mark of 11.06m and BU collected wins in the distance medley relay and men's 4x800. Biola's 4x800 relay team included Sonneland, Murphy, Geringer, von Molendorff, Tomasini, Bailey, Aidan Arredondo and Rouxan Le Roux (7:51.76).
