HONOLULU, Hawaii---The Biola women's basketball team fended off Chaminade in a 58-55 victory at McCabe Gymnasium.
"I think we played really good as a team," stated the Eagles' leading scorer Trasara Alexander. "I think we need to clean up some stuff obviously defensively, but this was a good win and I'm glad we pulled it off."
Chaminade had a hot start in the first quarter (out-scoring Biola 15-10) but the Eagles would come back in a big way, out-scoring the Silverswords 20-7 in the second.
Biola found their offensive groove in the second where they shot 50 percent from the field and 45.45 percent from beyond the arc while holding Chaminade to 15.38 percent from the field and 16.67 percent from downtown.
Laila Walker led the second-quarter scoring with six points and she was followed by Alexander (5), Jaycee Goldsmith (3), Kaylen Kamelamela (3), Jordan Rabe (2) and Eleni Cabrera (1). Walker also led the Eagles in second-quarter three's, recording two of BU's five. Kamelamela, Goldsmith and Alexander each had a trey.Â
Thanks to a dominant second quarter, Biola led by eight points (30-22) heading into the halftime break.Â
The Silverswords started to come back in the third quarter where they matched Biola in points. Both teams posted 16 points and the Eagles continued to lead by eight going into the fourth (46-38).
Chaminade put together their strongest showing in the final frame where they out-scored Biola 17-12. CUH took the lead back with 3:12 on the game clock (55-54) but the Eagles would cash in the final two buckets of the game at 1:44 and :17 to win by three (58-55).
Alexander had the game-winner at 1:44 that put Biola up 57-55 and Kamelamela cushioned the Eagles lead with a made free throw (58-55).
Alexander, Biola's leading scorer, recorded a season-high of 15 points. Rabe was BU's next-best scorer with 10 and Kamelamela had nine.
Biola plays next on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 5:30pm against Azusa Pacific at Chase Gymnasium.Â
