BU Pushes Through Collegiate Winter Invite

The Biola men’s and women’s swim and dive teams hit the road for a three-day meet at the 2024 Collegiate Winter Invite hosted by the University of La Verne.

Los Angeles, Calif. --- Over the weekend, the Biola swim and dive teams competed in the 2024 Collegiate Winter Invite hosted by the University of La Verne. Biola was one of 16 schools to compete in the Winter Invite. 

Of the 16 women's teams, the Eagles placed fourth in the meet with 925.5 points and the men's team took home seventh place of 13 with 632.5 points. Between the two teams, BU tallied a total of three podium finishes. 

The meet began with the 200 freestyle relays where Kimmy Gordon, Opal Vail, Lauren Smith and Phoebe Munholland competed in a tight race, coming in eighth place, but finishing just two seconds behind the fifth place team. The men closed out the 200 freestyle relays with a 1:27.59 time. 

Allison Yancey, Malia Ciolli, Morgan Kampfer, and Munholland reeled in a fourth place finish in the 400 medley relay and an eighth place spot in the 200 medley relay. Ryan Monrean, Andrew Hanson, Jonathan De Dios and Mark Shalhoub finished with a 1:34.92 time in the men's relay where they finished ninth in the race.  

Both teams finished in eighth place in the 800 freestyle relays and the women took home a fourth place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with their 3:30.75 mark. 

Kampfer picked up a podium finish in the 200 butterfly event where she finished 2:07.68, cutting off two seconds from her preliminary race. On the men's side of the race, Wyatt Miller recorded a 1:56.86 time and finished in eighth. 

Josh Peace put Biola's name in the fifth spot of the men's 500 freestyle leaderboard with his 4:40.27 time. Samuel Slezak led his heat with a 4:39.03 time, just seconds short of his career best. On the women's side, Emily Sheldon also led her heat with her collegiate best 5:07.53 mark. 

BU had another collegiate best set at the Winter Invite when Yancey recorded a fifth place 56.86 finish in the 100 butterfly event. Yancey was also close to setting a personal best in the 100 backstroke where she came in sixth place and finished just two seconds from her current best. She left impressions throughout the invite as she picked up another sixth place finish for the Eagles in the 200 IM. 

On the men's side of the 100 backstroke, Alejandro Marchesini and Monrean finished two seconds apart from each other where Marchesini recorded a fourth place finish. 

Marchesini and Monrean had another tight race in the 200 backstroke where they finished just a second apart from each other, Marchesini finished in fourth and Monrean followed in sixth. 

The Eagles had four finishes in the top 13 of the women's 400 IM race with Chloe Colvard leading her teammates in seventh place. 

The Biola men ruled the top ten of 29 in the men's 1650 freestyle event as Peace made his way onto the podium with a 16:02.91 third place finish; Slezak and Noah Hall finished in fifth and ninth. 

Coco Friedly came in fourth of 36 swimmers in the 100 IM and Jacob Haaksma finished in seventh on the men's side of the event. 

Lorelai Carney took home the best podium finish of the day with second place in the 1M dive. Carney tallied 230.45 points and led third place by 2.10 points. She then went on to finish in the fourth place spot with 230.55 points in the 3M dives. Lauren Smith followed up her teammate in ninth and 14th in the diving events. 

On the men's diving side, Caleb Pook finished seventh in the 1M event with 212.15 points and came in sixth in the 3M event. Sebastian Burgos recorded ninth and eleventh place finishes in the diving events. 

The Eagles will be back in the pool at home on December 7th as they host California Baptist University beginning at 10:30 am. BU divers will also be competing at the Riverside City College Dive Meet beginning on December 6th.
