Strong Start, Tough Finish

The women’s basketball team opened strong against Cal Poly Pomona but struggled to maintain their momentum, ultimately falling to the Broncos 68-58.

LA MIRADA—The Biola women's basketball team opened strong against Cal Poly Pomona but struggled to maintain their momentum, ultimately falling to the Broncos 68-58.

Jessa Thurman recorded a double-double in Biola's loss. The Sophomore led BU with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Sammie Henley also scored in the double-digits, recording 13 points. Sydney Moran and Alyssa Kubo fell just short of the double-digit mark, tallying nine points each.

Biola had a strong start, out-scoring Cal Poly Pomona 15-14. BU opened the quarter with three-consecutive three-pointers. Kubo and Henley teamed up to give Biola a nine-point lead. 

CPP scored the next basket and began to chip away at BU's lead. The Eagles ended the first quarter up by one (15-14).

Cal Poly Pomona came back strong in the second quarter and would keep the momentum for the rest of the game. The Eagles gave up 22 turnovers to the Broncos 11, which allowed CPP to score 14 additional points. The Broncos were also able to create scoring opportunities in the paint where they out-performed Biola 32-24. 

The Eagles were limited by an impressive defensive performance by the Broncos. CPP had five blocks and held BU to 44 percent in the field and 33 percent beyond the arc.

Biola had a good night at the boards where they out-did Cal Poly Pomona 35-24. Twenty-six of BU's rebounds were defensive to CPP's 19.

Additionally, the Eagles' bench packed a punch where they out-scored the Broncos bench 14-6. Moran led Biola on that front, going 3-for-8 beyond the arc. 

Biola plays next on Monday, November 18th at 7:30 p.m. against Alaska Anchorage at Chase Gymnasium.
