Eagles Soar Up To Malibu

Biola begins road competition in sunny Malibu for the Rodionoff Invite.

October 04, 2024

MALIBU, Calif. — For the first time this season Biola Swim & Dive hit the road on Friday. The Eagles took the bus up to Malibu for a gorgeous day for swimming up at Pepperdine University for day one of the prestigious Rodionoff Invitate.

The day marked a nice return to a traditional early season meet for Biola after taking last season off from the Malibu trip.

Day one began with eight events for each gender, with the 200-freestyle relay and 400-medley relay serving as bookends for those events.

The women sit fourth overall in the women's standings and the men are third after day one of action, both sitting ahead of NCAA Division I rival, California Baptist. The women are one point out of third and the men six points out of second headed into day two of the competition.

Jacob Haaksma began the day with a bright spot for Biola. The senior won the men's 200-IM with a 1:56.41. It's the best swim in that event by any Biola swimmer this season. He won the race by three-tenths. Haaksma would finish second in the 100-breaststroke later in the day to put up strong numbers for BU.

Morgan Kampfer scored the best individual female finish on Friday as she put up a 2:09 flat to place second in the 200-butterfly. There was just one NCAA Division I swimmer out in front of her, Gabby Henry of Utah Tech. In the men's matching event Wyatt Miller swam away with a huge victory after touching the end wall in 1:57.76.

On the women's side, top-10 finishes were a challenge to come by in a deep pool of swimmers. Coco Friedley had the Eagles' first top-10 of the day when she went 2:13.98 to place 10th in the women's 200-IM.

Allison Yancey continued to build herself a solid start to her sophomore campaign by recording a 2:11.79 to almost identically match her swim last week in the 200-backstroke. This week that time was good enough for eighth.

Nathan Griffin also nearly matched last week's time identically in the event, and he did manage to match last week's result. He finished atop the podium in Friday's 200-backstroke with a winning time of 1:54.26. He had friends to join him on the podium as he, Alejandro Marchesini and Ryan Monrean swept the top-3 spots.

Phoebe Munholland scored the women's top 100-freestyle time of the young season as she went :54.09 to place seventh in the premier event.

Diving also began on Friday with the women's three-meter and men's one-meter. Lorelai Carney had the best finish of any Biola diver, coming in fourth with a 266.20. It was a nice follow-up to her setting a new school record last week.

Day two is slated for nine more swimming events and another pair of diving soirées. Swims begin at 10 a.m. Follow along with a live stream on OVRNGHT Sports.
