Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Sudden Death

Biola battles throughout with Wagner College, but falls short during 2nd sudden death period.

WHITTIER, Calif. — Heartbreak.

After being unable to capitalize on a few power play opportunities in sudden-death overtime, Biola Men's Water Polo sees its opponent Wagner College get a goal just over one minute into a second sudden-death period to clinch a 13-12 win over the Eagles.

Biola and Wagner were incredibly evenly matched throughout the contest, with 21 of the game's 25 total goals resulting in either a tie score or new leader. The Eagles held the biggest lead of the game by being out in front by two on two separate occasions during the third period.

However, a penalty shot goal in the final second of the third and the opening goal in the fourth allowed Wagner to set the score to tied again and essentially start a whole new ballgame.

A Kyle Seifen goal at the 5:35 mark in the fourth period put Biola back out ahead 10-9 before both teams experienced a long scoring drought. It was not until a Wagner goal with 1:51 to go that another shot found the twine. That tied it at 10, which was the score line at the end of regulation.

Biola was able to draw two exclusions in the final minute and change but the team could not convert, and so to overtime we went.

John Grasso scored once in each overtime period to help force the game to sudden death. He opened the overtime scoring in period five and then scored with 41 seconds left in period number six to overcome back-to-back scores from Wagner.

Unfortunately for BU, the Eagles were 0-for-2 on the power play as neither team scored in the first sudden-death period and then Wagner's Matan Fridenberg ended the game just over one minute into the second sudden-death period with his second goal of the day.

Grasso led the Eagles with a hat trick. Nolan Rapp and Gavin McKenzie added two goals a piece in a thrilling, although painful contest.

The loss drops Biola to 6-11 on the season. They conclude the three-match day with a 5 p.m. match against Whittier College. Whittier should be another good matchup as the Poets defeated Wagner 8-7 earlier in this day. Catch the live results for that match at theFOSH
