Biola Blows By Sunbirds

The Eagles grabbed a double-digit victory on Friday, defeating visiting Fresno Pacific for their seventh-straight.

LA MIRADA --- The six game homestand wrapped up on Friday, as the Eagles posted a perfect 6-0 record in the stretch. Biola (11-4, 6-1 PacWest) hosted Fresno Pacific (1-12, 0-5 PacWest) on Friday night and delivered with a 73-56 win. The team's winning streak was extended to seven, while moving them into first place in the conference standings.

FPU jumped out early with three quick three-pointers. The lead was vanquished in short order though, as the Eagles scored 10-straight points for a 12-9 advantage.

Biola broke away late in the first half with another big run. 11 unanswered points came through with a score on five-consecutive possessions. Entering the half, BU led 37-22.

"We knew we needed to come out and move the ball, play our game, and dominate inside," said junior guard Casey Cappo.

After the break, Daniel Esparza got his floater going and made 10 points in the second half. The BU guard used his speed to get into the lane and landed five field goals with a 62.5 field goal percentage.

The team's lead never fell below seven, while reaching as high as 19 twice. A 13-1 run pushed the advantage to 19 with points coming from five different Eagles in the rally.

BU dominated the boards on Friday, outrebounding the visitors, 45-30. Nine Eagles grabbed at least three rebounds with Cappo leading the way with eight.

Everyone also got involved in dishing the rock, as seven players handed out exactly two assists.

The backcourt carried the scoring load with Nathan Medina and Esparza leading the charge. Medina piled it on in the first half with 14, before finishing the night with 19. Esparza compiled a total of 18 points in the win.

Biola will hit the road for the first time in a month when it plays Point Loma on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
