Defense Shines in a Duo of Dubs

Biola gave up a combined 11 goals on Thursday on the way to two victories.

WHITTIER, Calif. --- Opposing offenses were unsuccessful against the Biola defense on Thursday. Biola (6-9) grabbed comfortable wins over Whittier and conference foe McKendree by a combined margin of victory of 28.

BU's first contest of the day came against the hosting school of the afternoon in the Whittier Poets. The match belonged to the Eagles from the jump in a 24-5 rout for Biola.

12 of the first 13 goals of the contest went the way of the Eagles. The defense for Biola was stout, giving up just one goal in three of the four quarters, while only allowing five through the 32 minute game.

The BU offense played consistently strong, posting six goals in each frame. 14 different Eagles got in on the scoring action, while Nolan Rapp and Roman Saroyan paved the way with four goals each.

Matthew Rodriguez shined with a pair of scores and four assists, while three more teammates logged multiple goals including Luke Franklin, John Grasso, and Kyle Seifen.

Later in the afternoon, the Eagles were back in the pool in a bout against McKendree. BU took care of business and claimed a 15-6 victory.

Mitchell Carpenter put on a show to lead Biola to its second win of the day. The BU keeper was credited with 23 saves and only six goals allowed for a .793 save percentage. He also added two assists and two steals for an all-round spectacular afternoon.

The offense shot out of a cannon after the opening sprint, collecting seven goals in the first quarter. Following a 2-2 tie, Biola recorded nine unanswered goals to break open the game before the end of the first half.

Fresh off a WWPA weekly honor, Maxwell Osborn stood out with five goals in the win.

Caleb Hernandez was an instigator on the attack, as well. The sophomore picked up three goals and four assists for seven points.

Biola will be back in action on Friday in the Gary Troyer Tournament at Occidental at 1:00pm.
