Another Os-ome Effort

Maxwell Osborn goes wild with six scores as Biola pushes Air Force to sudden death.

FULLERTON, Calif. — The conclusion of the Titan Invitational was filled with fireworks for the Biola Eagles. For the second-straight contest, the Eagles faced a team receiving votes in the latest national poll. This time, Biola battled the United States Air Force Academy and took the game through two overtimes and one sudden-death period, before the Falcons claimed an 18-17 win over BU.

The whole match seemed balanced between two teams which could not create separation. The largest lead of the day belonged to Air Force, with just a meager three-goal lead early in the game. That 5-2 lead happened as Air Force scored first in the second period.

Following that goal, the two teams traded tallies all the way through the second frame, until a third-period surge put Biola into upset alert territory. Three goals in a remarkable one minute and 12 second run brought Biola back into this match as a goal by Caleb Hernandez made it a one goal game with BU trailing 10-9 and five minutes left until the fourth quarter.

Head Coach Rick Nordell's Eagles would utilize another super spurt in scoring between 2:23 and 0:59 in the third quarter to take their first lead of the game. Adam LaVoy, Maxwell Osborn and then LaVoy again scored as Biola carded the longest scoring streak any team had throughout the game to pull ahead 12-11. Osborn was balling in this one as he tallied six goals and an assist to push the team to the brink of victory.

The three-consecutive goals sent Biola soaring into the fourth quarter, but the resolve from Air Force enabled the Falcons to answer back. Air Force outscored Biola 4-3 in the fourth period, using a goal with 11 seconds left in regulation to tie the match at 15 and send it into overtime.

The Eagles held Air Force without a goal in the first overtime to lead by one. But, USAFA answered back in the second frame to keep things equal at the end of the required extra time.

That necessitated a gut-wrenching sudden death period, which saw Air Force score a game-winner while BU was a man down. The exclusion was a pain point for Biola throughout this one as coach Nordell's squad had 12 exclusions called against them and drew just four from their opponents.

Both goalkeepers were locked in throughout as USAFA's keeper had 13 saves and Biola's Mitchell Carpenter had 12 of his own while tallying three assists.

At the end of the day, the loss stings, but this team can continue to keep their heads high knowing that week in and week out they're competing with teams ranked or on the fringes of being ranked. In due time, Nordell's squad should be in that same, exact spot.

The Eagles are back in action this Thursday as they head to Whittier College to face the Poets and for a non-conference, neutral-site battle against WWPA foe, McKendree. Live scoring and video information will be posted as it's made available.
