INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.--- One moment student-athletes are beginning their first day of college and what feels like almost the next, are faced with the daunting process of transitioning to life after sports. 

Gigi Fierro (women's track & field) and Jackie Mudd (women's swimming and diving) were fortunate enough to learn how to embrace and own that change at the NCAA Career and Sports Forum as two of just 200 athletes nationwide who were selected to attend the forum at the NCAA's national headquarters.

At the Career and Sports Forum, Fierro and Mudd heard from an array of sports professionals and learned how to use their personal strengths to their advantage when pursuing career opportunities. They were also taught the importance of networking and had the opportunity to practice with their peers and the sports professionals in attendance at the forum.

When asked about their experience at the NCAA conference, Fierro and Mudd had nothing but good things to say.

"It was a privilege to attend the NCAA's Career and Sports Forum," exclaimed Fierro, who recently graduated with her bachelor's in journalism and integrated media. "The experience made me realize how influential I can be and I enjoyed learning from speakers of all different backgrounds and hearing their stories of how they became successful."

Mudd reflected Fierro's positive sentiments. "I had an amazing experience at the Career and Sports Forum," stated Mudd, a redshirt junior who is pursuing her bachelor's in kinesiology. "Everyone at the forum was uplifting and respectful. I enjoyed learning from professionals in different fields and the NCAA did a great job of having something for everyone." 

Fierro and Mudd both shared that after only four days they gained long-lasting friendships, meaningful professional connections, confidence in their ability to succeed in their desired careers and excitement to make an impact in the future. 

Fierro elaborated, "Before my network was small and I was able to branch out at the Career and Sports Forum where I made at least 50 meaningful connections. I just graduated in May and while at the forum I learned how to move forward as I am transitioning to my new life outside of sports."

"After just four days, I walked out with some of my best friends," stated Mudd. "Before attending the convention I was doubting myself and my desire to be a swim coach and at the end of the convention I left more sure of myself than ever."

Both Fierro and Mudd felt their lives had been changed after the NCAA's annual conference, beaming from the welcoming environment and ready to step into action.

When reflecting on what she learned from the convention, Fierro closed with, "People underestimate how much successful professionals want to give to the upcoming generation and see them succeed. If I were to give student-athletes one piece of advice, it would be to not be afraid to ask." 

Mudd closed with, "The Career and Sports forum was the most life-changing event that I've been a part of. At the beginning, I was nervous and had no expectations, but I ended up learning so much about myself. I'll hold onto the things I learned there forever."
