Eight Eagles Achieve Academic All-District Honors

The Biola cross country and track & field programs had eight athletes named to the CSC’s Academic All-District teams.

GREENWOOD, Ind.---The Biola cross country and track & field programs had eight athletes selected to the College Sports Communicator's Academic All-District teams.

The Eagles had five women and three men represented on the CSC's academic teams.

To be eligible student-athletes must be a starter or key reserve who played in at least 50 percent of their teams games with at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. Athletes also must have been at their institution for at least 12 months to be eligible, unless they are a graduate student. 

Hannah Champness, Rebeka Preston, Jada Pierce, Grace Catena and Britta Holmberg were the women's five honorees.

Champness ended her senior year with a 3.83 cumulative GPA in kinesiology and recorded six top 10 finishes, two of which were podium finishes. At the PacWest Championships she placed fifth in the 1,500m run and eighth in the 800m run. Champness achieved career bests in the 6k (22:00.8), mile (5:08.15), 800m run (2:10.67) and 1,500m run (4:29.59).

Preston had an outstanding season while earning a 3.76 cumulative GPA in her master's in leadership. This past season she earned two NCAA provisional marks, 15 top 10 finishes, and six podium finishes. Preston was All-PacWest in triple jump where she placed second and 400m hurdles where she placed third at the PacWest Championships. Preston achieved career bests in 400m hurdles (1:01.32), 100m hurdles (14.30), triple jump (12.17m) and long jump (5.76m).

Pierce ended her last year with the Eagles with a cumulative GPA of 3.71 in her master's of marriage and family therapy. Pierce racked up 17 podium finishes in her senior season with six of those being podium finishes. Pierce achieved career bests in shot put (12.68m) and javelin throw (35.69m).  

Catena ended the year with a cumulative GPA of 3.62 in kinesiology. Catena recorded seven top 10 finishes, three of which were second place podium finishes. Catena was All-PacWest at the PacWest Cross Country Championships and PacWest Track & Field Championships. She placed sixth in the 6k at the PacWest Cross Country Championships and second in the 3000m steeplechase PacWest Track & Field Championships.

Holmberg is Biola's last women's selection. Holmberg capped the 2022-23 seasons with a 3.83 cumulative GPA in kinesiology. Holmberg recorded five top 10 finishes, three of which were podium finishes. She was also All-PacWest at the PacWest Cross Country Championships and PacWest Track & Field Championships. Holmberg placed 14th in the 6k at the PacWest Cross Country Championships and third in the 3000m steeplechase at the PacWest Track & Field Championships.

Mathias Davis, Trevor Hormel and Christian Lukens represented Biola's men on the CSC's Academic All-District team.


Davis ended his senior year with a 3.97 cumulative GPA in his master's of speech language pathology. Davis recorded six individual top 10 finishes during his final season, two of which were podium finishes. He also had one podium finish as a member of the 4x400 relay team at the PLNU Invitational. At the PacWest Track & Field Championships, Davis placed seventh in the 400 dash and high jump. Davis also achieved career bests in 400 dash (48.49), 600m run (1:23.17) and high jump (1.92m).  

Hormel capped his senior season with a 3.67 cumulative GPA in accounting where he achieved a career best in the 100m dash at the Ross and Sharon Irwin meet, placing 24th with a time of 11.35. He was also a part of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams and totaled two podium finishes with his teammates. 

Lukens wraps up Biola's CSC Academic All-District selections. The Junior ended the year with a 3.51 GPA in business administration and seven top 10 finishes. Lukens had one podium finish, achieving third place at the Pomona-Pitzer Collegiate All-Comers meet in the 110m hurdles. 

WHAT'S NEXT?
All-District selections will move on and be voted on for Academic All-America. The women's Academic All-American team will be released on Wednesday, June 28 and the men's will follow on Thursday, June 29.
