Eagles Falter in a Tough Sixth

The softball team lost their second game 7-3 to the nationally-ranked No. 9 Golden Eagles. BU faltered in the sixth where CUI widened their lead.

IRVINE, Calif.---The Biola softball team lost their second game 7-3 to nationally-ranked No. 9 Concordia at Golden Eagles Field. 

Biola (17-18 overall, 9-9 PacWest) worked ahead by scoring the first run in the first inning. Alexis Lara singled to give BU a baserunner and advanced to second when Abie Nowak walked. Rilee Ruvalcaba clutched up with a single to center to give Biola the first run of the game, 1-0.

CUI (33-3, 18-4 PacWest) got the one-up over BU in the second inning where they scored two runs, 2-1.

The fourth and fifth innings would quiet down, leaving zeros on the scoreboard for both teams. 

Biola broke through in the sixth inning, scoring the game-tying run (2-2). Cami Lara doubled with two outs, sparking a rally. Brie Nowak was then put in to pinch hit and came up big for her team with a single to center that scored Lara.

However, the Golden Eagles responded with five runs in the bottom of the sixth that gave them a comfortable 7-2 lead. 

Biola would scrape one run across in the seventh which resulted in the Eagles' 7-3 loss. Colby McClinton singled to lead off the seventh and was pushed over to second by Alexis Lara. Abie Nowak then hit in Biola's third run.

Kayla Bousquette started game two for Biola in the circle, tossing 5.1 innings. Bousquette allowed eight hits and four runs to score and was relieved by Raylene Roybal in the sixth. Roybal allowed three hits and three runs to score and was then relieved by Kylee Messmer who closed out the inning. Messmer faced three batters and allowed CUI one hit.

The Eagles will regroup and prepare for their next game against Holy Names at home. Biola plays the Hawks at 12 and 2 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 14 at Freedom Field.
