Peak Performance at Pomona-Pitzer

Biola’s track and field squads took to the Pomona-Pitzer Invite on Saturday and saw strong showings from the women’s team.

POMONA, Calif. --- The weekend of Easter brought the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational for the BU track and field squads. The Saturday competition saw 11 podium finishes for BU, including 10 from the Biola women's team.

Katie Thompson had herself a day with the field events on Saturday. The freshman was top-three in two events, including the long jump and high jump. Each podium finish came in the number three spot, as she reached marks of 5.11m in the long jump and 1.50m in the high jump.

The Eagles took care of business in the high jump event, placing someone on each step of the podium. Hanna Bevan took the top spot with a jump of 1.65m, defeating the field by .10 meters or more. Joley Sproul grabbed silver at 1.55m. The sophomore posted a successful try on her third and final attempt at 1.55m, separating herself from the pack in third place at 1.50m.

Priscilla Jones and Jada Pierce thrived in the throws for BU. Jones came through with a toss of 12.27m in the shot put for a second place showing and was followed by Pierce in a tie for fourth at 11.95m. Pierce reached the podium in the hammer throw, nabbing third with a throw of 45.28m on her first attempt.

Mathias Davis shined for the men's squad on the track with his performances in the 400 and 4x100 relay. The graduate student raced ahead in the 400 and took bronze behind a time of 48.66. Jack Sapyta took fifth in the same event, coming in at 49.31. Sapyta and Davis joined forces with Dominic Castro and Jayden Bennett to finish in fourth in the 4x100 relay with a time of 43.08.

In the distance events, Maggie Williams was the standout Eagle on Saturday. The freshman was electric in the 800 with a time of 2:11.74, which was good enough for second place. She also added a stellar performance in the 1500 with a fourth place finish at 4:33.77.

As a team, Biola stacked runners in the top end of the 800 and 1500 races. Jordan Gossett and Hailey Wurzbach added to the 800 with sixth and 11th place showings, while Hannah Champness scored fifth place in the 1500.

Lolo Landrith came through big in the 3000 steeplechase. The freshman logged a time of 11:41.73 and posted a third place finish.

The 400 hurdles saw Sophia Morris and her speed on Saturday. Morris posted a second place finish with a time of 1:04.29. In the 100 hurdles, Biola found success with Christian Lukens and Caleb Pook earning fifth and eight place finishes, while Kenna Chism (4th), Morris (6th), and Jones (9th) all landed in the top-10 on the women's side.

The women's 4x100 relay featured Priscilla Jones, Audrey Mousa, Maria Vidal Poy, and Kelaiah Moore. The group of four tag-teamed for third place and offered a mark of 49.25. 

The BU men's and women's track and field teams will be back in action at the Mt. Sac Relays and Bryan Clay Invitational next week, beginning on Wednesday and Thursday.
