Ortiz Gives Hope

AJ Ortiz does all he can in the final game of the regular season, but the Eagles fall short in 11-6 loss against Holy Names.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles (19-27, 13-15 PacWest) gave the Hawks (25-23, 15-17 PacWest) an early lead, but AJ Ortiz gave Biola fans hope in the bottom of the fifth inning. Unfortunately, Holy Names came out on top in game four at Eagles Diamond on Biola's senior day.

HNU took game one on Saturday when they got a hold of a late offensive momentum and they did not let go of it as they picked up an early lead in game two. Back-to-back walks and a single to start off the game put the Hawks on the board first. Blake Wentz retired the next two batters, but a few errors on the Eagles defense led to Holy Names taking an early 4-0 lead.

The Eagles could not find a way to answer back immediately after, but there was still a lot of baseball to play.

Holy Names went into the second inning with a strong lead but it didn't hurt to tack on a few more runs. The Hawks were productive in a bases loaded situation again and added on three runs, giving themselves a 7-0 lead over the Eagles after two frames.

Senior, Brandon McClean entered the game in the third inning and held the Hawks scoreless which gave the Biola dugout a bit of motivation.

With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Oscar Serratos hit his second solo home run of the day to put Biola on the board. The Eagles got two runners in scoring position after the home run, but could not bring them across the plate.

The Hawks found a way to bring in an extra insurance run, which extended the Hawks lead to 8-1 in the fourth inning.

James Whitman tried to get something going for the Eagles as he hit a lead-off home run, but the solo shot was the only type of scoring BU could find in the fourth inning.

The Hawks continued to add insurance runs as they tallied on another two. BU trailed by eight (10-2) going into the bottom of the fifth inning with just two innings left for the Eagles to clinch a playoff spot.

Jonathan Smith got a late rally going for Biola with a lead off single and two walks followed to load the bases. Ortiz hit a grand slam to put the Eagles back in the game. Biola still trailed 10-6 after five innings.

Holy Names led off the sixth inning with a double which ended up turning into a little league inside the park home run to turn the Hawks lead into 11-6.

The Eagles found themselves with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, but they were unable to pick up any runs. With three outs left and a playoff spot still on the line, HNU's pitching got the best of the Eagles. Biola lost the final game of the regular season 11-6.

Serratos, Ortiz and Smith were all valuable players in the final game of the season. Serratos and Smith were two for three and Ortiz was one for three with four RBI's.
