Quality Start

The Eagles were victorious in the first of four against Holy Names, behind a gem from Bobby Brown.

LA MIRADA --- Four crucial games to end Biola's regular season began with a beauty from Bobby Brown. Game one on Friday afternoon was all Biola (18-25, 12-13 PacWest) in a 6-1 triumph over Holy Names (23-22, 13-16 PacWest). Brown drew the start and highlighted the day with an eight inning outing for the win.

With a bid to the PacWest Tournament on the line, the Biola Boys came to play in their final series of the season. A four-game sweep of the Hawks would secure the fourth seed of the postseason tournament in Fresno, California.

Brown was the instigator on the mound for the Eagles. The righty cruised through the HNU lineup without much trouble. Through four innings, Brown maintained a no-hitter with an error being the only runner allowed.

The fifth saw the first trouble with an infield hit starting it off for HNU. The visitors loaded the bases with one out, as Brown faced his first runner in scoring position. Brown did not bat an eye and forced a popup and strikeout to close out the frame without any damage done.

Brown closed his day with eight innings pitched and nine strikeouts. BU's starting hurler threw 105 pitches, giving up one run and three hits for his third win of 2023.

The BU bats were quick to the punch in game one, scoring five through the first two frames. It only took two at bats for the Eagles to score, as a double from AJ Ortiz brought home Gavin Ayers for a 1-0 BU lead. The first three batters reached base, as Biola tallied three in the bottom of the first.

The momentum continued in the second with a leadoff single from Jonathan Smith. The BU center fielder put himself into scoring position by stealing second and then moved within 90 feet of home, nabbing third base as well. A wild pitch scored Smith but the Eagles were not done. Wyatt Duncan reached on a walk and moved to second on the wild pitch. James Whitman cashed in for the Eagles, logging an RBI single to left field for a 5-0 Biola lead.

Biola's offense was active throughout the contest. In seven-of-eight plate appearances the Eagles placed at least one runner into scoring position. BU was able to add one more in the eighth for the 6-1 final score.

Gilbert Lopez toed the rubber for the top of the ninth and picked up right where Brown left off. The final three outs came quickly with two strikeouts from Lopez.

Four Eagles recorded a multi-hit game in the bout, while all nine hitters reached base at least once.

BU and HNU are underway in game two at Eagles Diamond.
