Perseverance Pays Off

Game two was scheduled for seven but went 10 frames on Saturday, ultimately resulting in a 4-3 win off a Taylor Justus walkoff.

LA MIRADA --- Saturday's back half of a double feature was a pitcher's duel with seven total runs in 10 innings. The contest was scheduled to go seven frames but the two evenly matched teams needed three extra innings to determine a winner. Biola (17-25, 11-13 PacWest) split the day with Concordia (17-23, 12-15 PacWest), taking the game by way of a walkoff single by Taylor Justus in a 4-3 triumph.

All of the scoring came in the fifth and sixth frames for both teams. Biola struck first in the fifth.

Both starting pitchers made it through the first four innings without a problem but the Eagles drew first blood with a strong rally for two runs. Tyler White touched home first, reaching by way of hit by pitch and scoring on a wild pitch. Jonathan Smith and Oscar Serratos stole second and third later in the inning and Wyatt Duncan delivered with a RBI single.

The 2-0 lead did not last long. Two home runs for the visiting Golden Eagles provided the answer in the next half inning. One solo shot and a two-run dinger put CUI ahead at 3-2.

The Eagles came up clutch in the bottom of the sixth and knotted the game at three. James Whitman led off with a single, before stealing second and moving into scoring position with one out. Sam Lisiak helped him advance to third with a base hit up the middle, which allowed White to score him on a groundout.

Relievers took over from the seventh inning moving forward with seven-straight zeroes on the scoreboard.

Jake Anderson put in the work for BU, logging four innings on the mound. The righty compiled four strikeouts, while keeping the visitors off the scoreboard to maintain the tie through extras.

The empty scoreboard left the door open for the hosting Eagles to walk it off in the bottom of the 10th. A hit by pitch and walk created an excellent opportunity with men on first and second with one out. A fielder's choice groundout put runners on first and third, before a walk loaded the bases with two outs. Justus stepped into the batter's box and delivered with a base hit through the left side of the infield, giving BU the 4-3 win.

Justus was a midgame substitution after Lisiak was ran for by Wyatt Thames late in the contest. Thames saw his first action of the season with the pinch running appearance. Justus saw two at bats in the game and was hit by a pitch in the first go around before sealing the game with the walkoff.

Bobby Brown started the game on the mound and was magnificent in the effort. The sophomore cruised through five innings, before giving up his first run in the sixth.

Usually a power hitting team, Biola changed pace and cashed in with singles and base running. The BU squad logged 10 hits in the contest with all 10 being singles, while also tallying four steals.

The Eagles will now turn their focus to their final four-game series, beginning on Friday with a doubleheader against Holy Names.
