Close Competition

The women’s golf team completed their first day of the Fujikura Invite in eighth place, but is close behind the top seven teams in what will be a close competition on Tuesday.

VISTA, Calif.---The Biola women's golf team completed the first day of the Fujikura Invite with a team score of 320. The Eagles finished the day in eighth place of a field of 15 teams at the Shadowridge Country Club.

Biola competed against a tough field of competitors which included three nationally-ranked teams by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA): No. 14 Cal State San Marcos, No. 20 Grand Valley State and No. 22 UT Tyler. There were also three teams in attendance who are receiving votes (RV) by the WGCA including Cal State East Bay, Cal State Monterey Bay and Colorado Christian. 

BU's eighth place team finish ranked above No. 20 Grand Valley State, RV Colorado Christian and RV UT Tyler.

The Eagles end the first round within a close margin of the top seven teams. BU is just three strokes behind Western Washington and Holy Names who are tied for sixth (317) and four strokes behind Sonoma State in fifth (316).

Brady Turnquist led Biola with a first round score of four-over-par 76. Turnquist tied for sixth with six others and is trailing the two tournament individual leaders by just four strokes. 

Jessica Cornelius made her first appearance in the starting five for the 2022-23 season. And Cornelius crushed it in her debut as the Eagles second-highest finisher tied for 29th with Rachel Shaw (80, +8).

Following Cornelius and Shaw was Emily Cons (T57, 84) and Melanie Reyes (T69, 86).

Biola will head out for the second round tomorrow, Tuesday, Mar. 7 with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
