Throwers Begin Beach Opener

The track and field team’s throwers competed in the first day of the Beach Opener.

LONG BEACH, Calif.--- The Biola track and field team's throwers competed in the first day of the Beach Opener hosted by Division I Long Beach State.

The Beach Opener included a wide range of participants from Division I, Division II, community colleges and elite club and open athletes from professional leagues.

Three other Division II universities participated in the first day including Cal State San Marcos, Cal Poly Pomona, and rival Azusa Pacific. 

Four events occurred on the first day and BU had throwers in three of the four. 

Four Eagles competed in the women's hammer throw event. Jada Pierce led BU in the hammer throw, placing 12th of 22 athletes. Pierce was the second-highest DII finisher after Cal Poly Pomona's Keiana Turner. 

Pierce was followed by Gigi Fierro (20th), Amaya Heard (26th) and Jordyn Tipp (27th). 

Biola's Sara Chao and Tipp competed in the women's javelin throw. Chao led BU in 15th and Tipp placed 21st.

Two of Biola's men participated in the men's javelin throw. Stefan Jungmichel recorded Biola's highest finish of 16th and Rhett Ayles was a couple slots behind in 19th.

The second day of the Beach Opener will be jam-packed with additional throwing events, jumping events, and track events. The first event is set to begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Mar. 4 and the last is scheduled to start at 4:05 p.m.
