Distance Runners See More Action

The track and field teams’ distance runners saw more action in the second day of the Mike Fanelli Track Classic.

DAY TWO RESULTS

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--- The Biola track and field teams' distance runners saw more action today in the second day of the Mike Fanelli Track Classic. 

The Mike Fanelli Track Classic is a three-day meet that originated in 2008 as the San Francisco State Distance Carnival and was renamed in 2019 after one of SFSU's track and field alumni and former coach Mike Fanelli. 

The 2023 field is composed of track and field athletes from various universities, community colleges and a handful of unattached athletes/teams. 

Biola had distance runners in four of the six events that took place which included the women's and men's 1,5000m run and 5,000m run.

Five runners represented Biola in the 1,500m run on the women's side including Hannah Champness, Maggie Williams, Emily Jensen, Jordan Gossett and Hailey Wurzbach. 

Champness and Williams led BU, finishing in the top 50 out of 163 runners. Champness was Biola's first leg to cross the finish line with a time of 4:36.34 in 30th. Williams was 38 milliseconds behind Champness with a time of 4:36.72 in 31st place.

The men had five runners compete in the 1,500m run and also had two rank in the top 50. Junior Charlie Bailey recorded Biola's highest finish of the day in the 1,500m run with a 18th-place finish and a time of 3:54.99. Bailey was the only BU runner to break the four minute mark in the event. 

Melt von Molendorff was BU's next best with a 44th place finish, recording a time of 4:00.75.

Biola's final three runners to compete in the 1,500m run were Aidan Arredondo, Caleb Murphy, Jeremiah Echeverria, and Jake Sorani. 

Bethany Mapes led Biola's women in the 5,000m run. Mapes placed 33rd with a speedy time of 17:21.37. Britta Holmberg also breached the event's top 50, placing 45th with a time of 17:32.90.

Lolo Landrith also raced in the 5,000m run, finishing 60th of 115 runners.

BU also had three men race in the 5,000m run including Aidan Tomasini, Ryan Todd and Connor Bramel.

Tomasini recorded the Eagles' highest mark where he placed 35th with a time of 14:39.60. Ryan Todd also came through in the top 50, placing 49th with a time of 14:48.80.

The track and field teams have a big day tomorrow with the first event beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the last occurring at 5:20 p.m. Both BU's runners and field athletes will see action on the final day of the invitational.
