Power and Pitching Combine for Win

The Eagles went for three home runs and eight scoreless frames in game one on Sunday for a victory over ART U.

LA MIRADA --- A rare Sunday doubleheader for Biola baseball started with a bang for the Biola Boys. Three different Eagles logged a home run in three-straight innings, as BU (11-17, 5-6 PacWest) powered its way by Academy of Art (10-15, 3-8 PacWest) for a 6-2 triumph.

The nine innings were covered between Lucas Bixby and Jake Anderson on the mound. The duo combined for eight blanks on the scoreboard and only two runs allowed.

Bixby drew his eighth start and picked up the win for the Eagles. The sophomore struck out six in the outing through five innings of work.

Biola took the lead at the end of Bixby's effort behind the power of Wyatt Duncan. A two-run homer from the first baseman flipped a one-run deficit into an advantage for BU at the end of the fifth frame. The long ball helped across the third run of the game for Biola, as Duncan logged all three RBIs to that point.

Noah Ruiz stayed hot at the plate, extending his hitting streak to eight games on Sunday. The freshman also single-handedly extended the Biola lead with a solo homer in the sixth for a 4-2 BU edge.

Another homer kept the momentum going for Biola in the seventh. This time, AJ Ortiz brought the power, posting his fifth home run of the year and putting the Eagles up by three. The Biola bats added for a fourth-straight time in the eighth and locked in the 6-2 scoreline.

Anderson delivered in relief for Biola and was credited with his second save of the season. The righty was dominant, facing 13 batters and retiring 11 of them. Anderson tacked on four strikeouts in his scoreless four inning outing.

All nine hitters in the BU lineup reached base in game one, including eight Eagles tallying at least one hit. Ruiz paced the team with three hits and was followed closely by Duncan with two.

Game two will be underway Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm.
