Saturday Shutout

Biola posted a combined shutout against Fresno Pacific on Saturday in a well-rounded effort.

LA MIRADA --- Biola was riding the momentum from its walkoff win on Thursday and came ready to hit the ball on Saturday. Four home runs helped the Eagles (7-14, 2-6 PacWest) take down Fresno Pacific (7-11, 1-2 PacWest), 8-0, on a day delayed by rain.

Weekend showers disrupted the baseball schedule on Saturday, as extensive field maintenance was required following rain. The previously scheduled doubleheader was adjusted to a single game at Eagles Diamond.

The delay did not seem to faze the Eagles, who were firing on all cylinders from the first pitch.

A scoreless top of the first from Andrew Beauvais was rewarded with explosive offense from the BU lineup. AJ Ortiz opened it up with a line drive that never stopped, flying easily over the left field fence for a solo homer. On the very next pitch, Wyatt Duncan repeated the result, launching his own home run.

After back-to-back homers, the Eagles added back-to-back doubles between Oscar Serratos and Taylor Justus. Four-straight extra-base hits guided the team to a quick 3-0 lead.

The attack was relentless, as Biola continued to tack on runs as the game progressed. The host squad posted a run in each of the first four frames for a 6-0 edge. Tyler White knocked a round-tripper in the second and Justus added to his standout day in the fourth inning, crushing a home run to left-center.

Beauvais got the job done on the mound, cruising through six innings. BU's starter logged 101 pitches for a scoreless outing, including four strikeouts and four hits allowed. The win marked his first win of 2023.

"Beau (Andrew) was awesome today and we were able to score early," commented head coach Jesse Rodgers. "Getting a conference series win is a step in the right direction for us. I'm proud of the team and how we showed up today after multiple delays and working to get the field playable."

The BU offense continued to threaten in the later innings, loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh. Sam Lisiak and Bobby Brown made it home after hitting singles, thanks to AJ Ortiz and an error from FPU.

Jake Anderson entered the game in relief of Beauvais and did well to keep the shutout intact. Anderson tallied two scoreless frames before Serratos finished it out a clean ninth. The shutout was the second of the season for BU, as the trio of pitchers combined for eight strikeouts.

The BU bats were hitting the ball hard all afternoon, helping score a team batting average of .314. Lisiak was perfect in the game with three singles in three at bats with one walk.

Biola baseball will return to the diamond next Saturday, taking on No. 11 Point Loma at 12:00 pm at home.
