ALAMEDA, Calif.--- The Biola women's golf team battled a field of 17 teams and the 47-degree weather at Cal State East Bay's Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout at the Corica Park Golf Course.

The Eagles faced stormy weather conditions throughout the day, which included an early lightning delay. Due to the conditions, the original 54-hole tournament was reduced to 36 holes. 

"Our ladies really did battle out there today," stated head coach Jane Carr. "Wind gusts up to 20 mph at times and pretty constant rain most of the day made it very challenging. After five holes we had a little over a two hour delay and then we were back at it until dark. It was very grueling at times, but I am very proud of our players' attitudes and fortitude."

Of the 17 teams in attendance, there was one nationally ranked team (No. 14 Cal State San Marcos) and two teams receiving votes (Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay) by the Women's Golf Coaches Association.

Biola finished one round and were four holes into the second round when play ceased due to the sun setting.

At the end of the day, Biola was tied for eighth overall with Cal State Monterey Bay with a 321 team score. The hosts, Cal State East Bay, led the tournament in first place (306), Point Loma and Cal State San Marcos were tied for second (312), Sonoma State and George Fox were tied for fourth (318), Cal State LA was in sixth (318), and Simon Fraser was in seventh (319).

Biola had two top-10 finishers at the end of the day which included the first four holes of the second round. Brady Turnquist led the Eagles tied for sixth and Jessica Cornelius was tied for ninth. Turnquist recorded a first round score of 76 and Cornelius carded a first round score of 78. However, Cornelius' score didn't count toward Biola's team score as she was competing as Biola's individualist.

Trailing Cornelius was Melanie Reyes (T14), Rachel Shaw (T37), Abigale Morris (T-74) and Emily Cons (T-77).

The second round is expected to continue at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the Corica Park Golf Course.
