BU Drops Game to No. 11 CPP

Biola scored first but could not keep up with the Broncos on Tuesday afternoon at Eagles Diamond.

LA MIRADA --- On Tuesday afternoon, the Eagles took to the diamond in a matchup against 11th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona (8-1). A trio of threes on the scoreboard helped the visitors claim the victory in a 9-3 fashion over Biola (4-8).

Brandon McClean got to work quickly on the mound and put together a strong outing. The righty faced nine batters in three innings and did not give up a single hit. The lone base runner reached by a walk and was promptly thrown out on an ensuing double play ball.

Brenden Bell and AJ Ortiz joined forces to score Biola's run in the bottom of the third. Bell led off the inning with a hard-hit ball over the right fielder's head for a double. With one out, Ortiz also found strength to the opposite field with a rope to the gap. The hit resulted in another double for BU, allowing Bell to scamper home from second.

The top half of the fourth saw an outburst from the visiting Broncos. A pair of infield singles got things going, before a homer capped off a three-run frame for CPP.

The Broncos held a 3-1 advantage for three innings, before adding to it in the eighth and ninth. For the second and third times in the game, CPP tacked on three runs in a single inning to claim a 9-1 lead.

The Eagles put together one last rally in the bottom of the ninth. Evan Rowe and Sam Lisiak got it going with a walk and single, respectively. Gavin Ayers moved them both over one base with a single to load the bases. Tyler White pinch hit and stepped to the plate, sending the first pitch he saw to the left field fence. The ball bounced once before the wall and gave the Eagles two runs off White's double. The rally stalled there, ending the game at 9-3.

With two doubles, Ortiz increased his total for the season to five, while going 2-5 at the plate in Tuesday's contest.

BU will head out to Hawaii for its next two series, starting with Hawaii Pacific on Friday at 5:00 pm (PST).
